Why Doesn't Sony Charge MORE for the PS3???

Post by racketboy »

I kinda thought about this topic back at the XBox 360 launch.
Sony and Microsoft both are losing money on their consoles, and in Sony's case the console is already high-priced as it is.
Normal logic would think that with a console so expensive, many gamers would be turned off and not buy the thing -- at least initially.
However, I'm sure you've all heard about the mobs trying to get one or more of the things.
And I'm sure you've also read about the thousands of dollars the PS3s are getting on eBay.

Obviously, the the supply and demand are unbalanced at this point and basic economics tells you that you should raise the price until supply and demand is balanced.

Sure, there will be plenty of moms that won't be able to afford a PS3 for their spoiled brat for Christmas, but obviously some fanboys want it more than they do.

Demand will surely go down after Christmas -- much like with the 360.
At that point, have a price cut back down to what it is now.

Shouldn't Sony be making the money off the consoles instead of the eBay scalpers?

Most of the auctions that fly past the $2000 point are won with fake accounts; either "not a registered user" accounts, or freshly created accounts with little feedback and nothing to lose. In fact, I am considering making a fake account, and joining in on the action.

Yeah, I figured that much, but I'm sure there are people willing to pay more than $800-$900 or so.

Well, I'm thinking more about the whole yeild problem with the PS3. Sony and microsoft has always made more money overall on the games and accesories than the consoles, but if so few people buy can buy a PS3, how will they sell a lot of games? It looks like Sony will lose a lot of money on this thing...

We're all wondering that. I'd like to know if Sony actually made money on the PS2...at all. I'm talking from launch til the present. They were losing money on every unit sold until the 4th year, give or take a few months. Did their software royalty fees really make up for that and still fetch them a profit, when everything is calculated together? Curious...

The ps2 has a ridiculous amount of games on it in the US, and with the JAP and UER market, the games are enough to make a profit I beleive. However, this is only a gamble that sony won I beleive. With the super expensive hardware, theres no way sony will win this time. I'm sure the hype will die, and people will move on with their lives.

exactly. I have actually always thought that the PS1 and the PS2 were flukes. I have my reasons, so plz don't argue with me about those. Considering its odd marketing and the inferior hardware to the saturn and that Sony just made the price cheaper cuz they wanted it to be cheaper than the competition (this is what I remember from wikipedia i believe). The reason i think the PS2 is a fluke is just me thinking Sony made the system without necesarily the developer's on their side and were mainly going blindly into it because of their phenominal success. Like I said, I don't want to go into it. But ya, i don't think Sony can pull this one off. Someone on another site really wants the PS3 to be the next Dreamcast
