My guess is that Insomniac and Naughty Dog just weren't making enough money off of their respective franchises and just sold them off to the highest bidder. A damn shame, but what can ya do - money's money.

Sony was just late to the party, so 3rd party developers got itchy trigger fingers. They got lazy and drunk off of their success last generation, like nintendo did in the early 90's.
