Universal Media Case PVC Sleeve (www.thecoverproject.net)

Post by fuctfuct »

I just wanted to get some opinions on what you think about the fact that the Universal Media Case sleeve is made of PVC.. I noticed some of you use these cases and i have been using them as well for the few loose games i have.

You may or may not know that the case itself is made from polypropylene (totally Ph neutral and safe for archival storage) BUT the sleeve on the outside is made of PVC. PVC breaks down chemically over time. This releases a gas which will break down and discolor your games/manuals/sleeve art.

I am not %100 convinced it matters at all since its only the sleeve and the actual game and manual is inside the polypropylene case. You can also re-print you cover art when it discolors (keep copy's of those jpgs you used as http://www.thecoverproject.net my not be around years in the future). Anyways i have decided to buy archival comic or paper back bags. I am going to cut them to size and put the game in that before it goes into the case to be on the safe side.

Just wanted to let you all know (in case you didn't) and get your opinions.

:P

I think I'll just stick to the original cases that my games came in.

Honestly it's not something I'm too concerned with. There aren't really any alternatives for casing carts, and I can always print off new covers as needed.

Bumping an old thread of mine to say i found a solution.

Since i'm anal i decided to buy small acid free bags (for storing comics or old photos) and put the carts/manuals in those before placing them in the case

I notice these are been sold at the racketBOY store now, cool :D

Here's a thought--I don't know if it would work, so I'd love to hear what you think--do you think that the archival spray that neutralizes acid in papers or photos and which is commonly used by scrapbookers would work on these cases? If so, you could simply buy some of the spray and spray down all your cases. . . .

Since the "harmful" part of these cases is on the outside i don't think this is a huge deal. I just thought everyone should at least know about it. I think cheap acid free plastic bags is the best solution for the anal like myself. Its worth noting that apparently even some Ziplock/sandwich bags (which are made for food) have acid in them. So make sure you know what your bags are made of before you buy them.
