New laptop, better faster stronger...laggy?

Post by ThunderPrince »

So! I made the big push to get a laptop, it is a Toshiba Satellite. It has an Intel Celeron processor and 2 gigs of RAM and came with Vista. It is literally lightyears ahead of my desktop so....why do emulators suck on it?
-Genesis, snes, nes, mame, everything lags. it is like the video cannot keep up and it lags pretty hard sometimes. It is annoying.

-However! SSF runs almost perfectly, which I am very happy about. Odd that Saturn games play better than NES games :?

So yeah, anybody know what might be the problem? Sorry if I didn't go too in-depth on what the specs are but I figure a modern pc should be able to run these emulators with no trouble. Is there a setting I need to adjust?

Very weird. Try using Direct3D/OpenGL modes in those emulators and see if there's any difference.

I'm no expert, but since you had the Daft Punk/Kanye West reference in the title, I'll at least try. The Celeron processor COULD have something to do with it. I've heard that Celeron processors use some sort of.. virtual processing? Anyone know what I'm talking about?

It's pretty hard to tell so what I would do is just experiment with different emulators and settings, I doubt your computer is incapable of running them smoothly.

I know a couple years ago when I had Vista on my Toshiba Satellite my emulators ran like shit. I put XP on my Toshiba and everything ran awesome.

You really had to bring THIS sort of argument up.

Vista isn't the problem its YOU people. Learn to use it, its fine. Yes I know its new and you have been using XP since 2001 but get over it.

On that note I agree with Mozgus, try messing w/ your graphics options.

What magical means of manipulation are you referring to? It's a known fact that Vista performs worse than XP, and there's not a damn thing any of us can do about it, short of disabling countless services, and causing mass instability and handicaps in the process. The man switched to XP and things ran better, not because he is in some way unable to utilize Vista, but because XP just demands less.

Yes, well, the main consistant problem goes back to what I said. People are running XP fine sure, that computer they bought in 2002 has worked fine. Problem is, they are trying to load a brand new system on it. Thats not really the problem in the OP's case here but my main point stands firm. People don't want to change, and don't want to upgrade their system in the first place.

My Satellite came preloaded with Vista and ran like shit. I didn't install Vista in a older computer, it was fresh off the shelf. And I wasn't trying to bring any arguement up, I was simply sharing my experience. XP was a better, more compatible and easier to use system at the time I switched from Vista to XP.
