I've seen these on eBay and online quite a lot.

They have the original looking box and seem to be licensed by Nintendo, but are these original, new SNES controllers?
Anyone know the story on them?

It's possible they are new. I'd be willing to trust an online retailer over an ebay seller, and we've also seen a recent bit of new Dreamcasts going around, including on Amazon.

i bought one of those about a year ago and while they look genuine i'm fairly certian that they are not. you can feel the difference in quality when compared to the an actual snes controller. still a pretty good deal at 4.00$ though.

If when you open the box the circle around the ABXY buttons isn't colored a light purplish-gray color then it's a knock-off.
The only other 'official' SNES controllers that can still be found new are the Majesco licensed/produced ones, which feature a light yellowish-gray circle around the ABXY buttons, a shorter cord and a generally shoddier build quality.
Gutting the Majesco's is a good way to find parts for broken official SNES controllers though.

Re: Q re: "New" SNES Controllers
It's hard to buy real SNES Controllers from eBay when its flooded with these things. I know it says Nintendo on the box, but they aren't real. I'm not sure if that's legal or not. The controller itself doesn't have the right logo on the front/center of it.
I'd say they're not worth buying. Years ago I bought a "brand new" SNES controller from eBay, it was like $5 or whatever, took it out of the box and only the B button worked.

Re: Q re: "New" SNES Controllers
It's getting seriously hard to find quality peripherals for older systems. I got a couple controllers like this, and one works decently (my guess is that I got lucky). The other one, however, refuses to go left. These things are hit and miss, and even the one I have that works is wearing down much faster than an actual licensed SNES controller. I've had the same problems with the Genesis too...
Re: Q re: "New" SNES Controllers
It wouldn't be hard at all to find a real SNES controller if eBay wasn't flooded with those shitty counterfeit ones.
Re: Q re: "New" SNES Controllers
These are sold in the streets here in Brazil for 10 reais (5 dollars) side by side with similarly good looking, boxed Genesis controllers.

Re: Q re: "New" SNES Controllers
I purchased one of these at our local Game Exchange after being assured by the rep at the counter that it was a real controller. I took it home, opened the box and immediately returned it. Besides the fact that not a button one worked on it, the controller was most definitely not an official Nintendo product. Unfortunately I've noticed that every Game Exchange in Central Arkansas as well as several independent game stores have all started carrying them. The sad thing is they all insist these are legitimate controllers. Of course they sell them side by side with the knock off consoles that will play all of your NES/SNES/Genesis games...
As a side note I've been noticing a number of unopened copies of F-Zero and Super Battleship for the SNES showing up at these stores as well. Have not purchased one myself given my previous luck with so-called "official" SNES controllers, but given the fact that every one of these game stores has multiple copies in stock I am definitely suspicious.
