Going to Run my first 5k...any advice?

Post by kingdomheights777 »

Hey guys whats up, I run and bike all the time, but i have never tried to compete. I have just decided to run my first 5k run in less than 4 weeks. Has anyone here done one, and do you have any advice?

I love 5ks. They're great for people who enjoy running but not destroying their bodies. I think that if you're "fast" and not just a marathon zombie with infinite endurance you'll do well.

Anyway, some general tips:

Don't be fooled by and follow the rabbits (people who start off way too quickly and then burn out).

Related to that tip; set your own pace. In all reality you will run much faster than you would in a non-race setting.

Depending on where you are in the pack: If you're in the middle and not gaining speed, increase you're pace a little. If you're toward the front of the pack and can save some energy for the end, my advice would be to do it and then overtake the spent runners in front of you during the last half mile.

Lastly, a very serious runner gave me a tip one time that I have found invaluable. If you get a sidestitch you often react by sucking in your stomach, but if you bloat out your stomach it will alleviate the sidestitch much more quickly.

With that--good luck!

Thanks for the tips dude, I am not a "fast" runner, but I keep a very steady pace . I usually don't run on pavement , its mostly on a treadmill on a slight incline. I just hope that doesn't hurt me too bad....

Yeah--I wouldn't advise carbo loading for a 5k, by any means.

I have done them and I have a blast. I run several times a week. I also use to run track and cross country so running has been something I have always enjoyed.. The only advice I have is keep at a steady pace and don't burn your energy to early on... 8)
