Noob here! Just got into retro gaming

Hello!

This site has been very helpful, so I thought I'd join to forums. I moved here to Japan about a year ago, at that time I wasn't really a core gamer. I just had a PS3 when I came here and just played Modern Warfare online most of the time. I'm more of a car guy/gear head who wrenches on cars in my free time.

It all began when one of my Japanese friends was getting rid of a lot of his stuff, so he gave me an old Saturn. He told me the Saturn was a special one because it was transparent. He also gave me a Gameboy with a built-in backlight (Never seen that before!) He didn't really have any games for either. So I didn't know much about Sega Saturn games, so I searched the net. I ended up on Racketboy. I ended up getting all the recommended games except for Psychic Assassin Taromaru. I saw it at a game shop, but it was 30,000 yen. Forget it! Anyway, because of this site, I got into shooters or "shmups". Now I'm addicted to Cave shooters and bought almost all of them for PS2 and Saturn (I just need Mushihime Sama). I had no idea the Saturn was so badass. I play it all the time. Radiant Silvergun is a pain in the ketsu. When the Saturn came out back in the 90s, I never bothered getting it. I was too into my PS1. OK, I digressed....

Anyway, perhaps I'll learn new ways to waste my money by learning from you guys. I've pretty much been to every retro game shop (There are TONS of them) in my area and beyond, so I know where to find things. If any of you have a request, I'll be glad to help! MAybe I'll post some things in the FOR SALE section if I am permitted to.

I would suggest that you get a mod chip for your saturn. It's one of the easier systems to mod. Check out the installation guides and identify which Saturn you have. Then you can burn the games that are too expensive to buy.

About modding, I am a chicken when it comes to opening systems. I'm afraid I'll screw something up. It seems more complex than working on an engine!

Don't worry about it, you've got a relevant question about modding anyway. I was hesitant the first time I opened up a console as well, but after carefully following a guide, it's gotten to be easier each time. Sure, be careful, but it's not as bad as you think. It's the same as opening a computer.

For mods like chipping a Saturn, I would suggest you get some training in with a soldering iron before anything else if you've never used one before. You don't want to potentially damage your stuff because you're not used to your tools, just like any other project.

Yeah, the more experience you get the more comfortable you feel, until you're opening up a Vectrex to mess around with some pots to adjust the screen position/size.
