another 'help me burn Saturn games' thread

Post by equalsign »

I just recently purchased a white modded JAP Sega Saturn console (HST-3220) and have had no luck burning a single game for it following multiple guides and using multiple programs. I'm trying to burn Nights into Dreams from a bin/cue format (yeah, the easy one). It's a good image.

I have a mac mini, but have Windows XP SP2 installed thanks to boot camp. I have tried using the Saturn Region Patcher to patch it. I used CDmage to check areas 000150-000151 for errors and found none. I have tried burning them on the mac side with Toast Titanium 8. I have tried burning them with Alcohol 120% (selected DAO/SAO & ignore EFM error). I have tried using Nero ROM according to Racket's guide. I have tried using IMG Burn and got some weird error message about the my computer's disc tray after it was done burning. Nothing works.

Help?

If your images are patched, and you're burning with Alcohol 120% (which burns anything), and your still can't get any of your CDRs to boot on your Saturn, you might want to take a look at your mod chip and make sure it is seated correctly, and that the power and signal wires haven't come loose. This may have happened if whoever you bought it from shipped it to you.

On a side note, what brand CDRs are you using, and what speed are you burning at?

The speed is important, older consoles don't deal well with cd's burned at higher speeds. The lower, the better. Personally I burn at 8x (the lowest my drive gets) and never had a problem.

I don't have the correct screw driver on me at the moment, so I'll have to borrow one from a friend as soon as I can to check the mod chip. I've been burning at 8x speed using Memorex brand CD-Rs.

Would it be possible for someone to give me a step by step guide to patching and burning a bin/cue file so I can tell if maybe I'm doing just one thing wrong?

I just remembered something. I haven't burned any Saturn games in a while so I might be wrong, but I think SRP has a problem with bin/cue images, it corrupts them when patching. I think I used to convert them to iso/mp3 before patching, or something. It's easy to check it that's the problem, either burn an image without patching or use SatHeader, a program to scan Saturn image files. Try to scan it before and after patching and see the difference.

I don't really see a way to scan using this program. It seems to be another Saturn region patching program. I think I'm going to go out and buy more blank discs to try the 'patch the iso' thing. How exactly does one make an iso from a cue file? Will I need to screw with the music files I suspect will be created?

Just open the image file with the program and you should see all the game's info (hardware, maker id, product number, version, etc, etc...). If the image is corrupted it should either show you an error or leave all the info spaces blank.

And yes, extracting an iso from a bin/cue will leave you with a lot of mp3's to deal with, but really, don't try that just yet, it's a lot of trouble and we're still not sure if that it's the problem. Before going into that just try to use satheader or download and burn a JAP game (without changing the region) to see if that's the problem.

I just tried burning Radiant Silvergun with Alcohol and have had no success. Should the disc not be spinning... like at all? Because that's what I noticed has been happening. On startup it says 'drive empty.' If I open and close the disc tray it says 'checking disc format' before it switches to 'drive empty' after a few seconds. During that time I hear something that sounds like the laser moving, but the disc stays stationary.
