While looking into buying a Sega CD unit, I came across several differing opinions concerning the different versions of the system. Some say that one may be less compatible than the other, or that one may have a shorter life span, or weaker lenses, or little attachment pieces that may be missing, etc.... Needless to say, I'm confused.
Anyone have any experience with more than one version? Or an opinion about which version they prefer?
(And I have both of the first two Genesis models, so I'm really interested in the 'best' option, given there even is one.)
Personal experience with different Sega CD models?

Model 1, it is the coolest looking and I have owned many. They have excellent lasers, get one and make sure that the tray opens. If it does, you are set!HellHammer wrote:While looking into buying a Sega CD unit, I came across several differing opinions concerning the different versions of the system. Re: Personal experience with different Sega CD models?
I have had better luck with model 2 Sega Cd's. However some things of note they have many different pieces such as grounding plates and an extender for the model one genesis. But with less moving parts i.e no tray just a lid I find them more reliable any model one I have had the tray has given up the ghost. For looks obviously model one Cd and Genesis stuff look better together as with Model 2 stuff being made to look better together. Also if you have a model 2 Sega Cd you don't need the extension plate.
Re: Personal experience with different Sega CD models?
I think it depends on what genesis you have I own a model 1 and wish I had the model 1 cd unit cause together they would look cool. The ultimate setup is a genesis 2-sega cd2-and a 32x.
so I need a different genesis and a 32x haha

Can't wait to swap out my model 2 for a 1. It's gonna look much slicker next to all my audio equipment.

Trust me, I'd consider giving up my SEGA CDX if someone offered me one in top shape.HeavyMetalMe wrote:We all doMod_Man_Extreme wrote:I want a Model 1 SEGA CD so freaking bad, but I don't ever see one at a decent price online.

Re: Personal experience with different Sega CD models?
I bought three Model 2 Sega CDs and none of them worked. I don't trust Model 2 Sega CDs as far as I can throw them... which is probably pretty far, but I digress. Anyway, I found a deal on a CDX for $50 and picked it up. Haven't had any trouble with it, so I'd suggest that one.
Re: Personal experience with different Sega CD models?
I have both, with their own Genesis models. Both look pretty sweet when they are with the correct system. I have no problem with either system in terms of playing games. The model 1 unit is "cooler" because it is more rare.. Most people have less problems with the model 2 units. Both are pretty awesome to have, so as long as you can find one that works, get whichever you can. I would recommend getting the model that matches your Genesis though... I am not a big can of the model 1 Genesis/model 2 Sega CD combo.

Re: Personal experience with different Sega CD models?
I picked up a model 1 Sega CD at a tag sale for like 10 bucks a couple years ago, just look locally and you might be surprised!
I have had Zero problems working it, and I play mine around once a week or so.
Are they really that rare in working condition?
