I'm not looking to play backups. I just want to load some homebrew apps.

Just gonna find out, I ordered a Supercard miniSD to try on my GB Player, one review I read after I bought it said that it did not work.... Here's hoping they are wrong.

Yup, I used an old M3 cf on one for quite awhile with no problems.
As for homebrew I'm pretty sure there's a memory card adapter that takes sd cards and a bootdisk that lets you do fun stuff, I don't know the name though.

SD Geko? I think that's it.

That is what I use. I use it for homebrew and booting back-ups. It works great and no issue at all. You just need an SD card for it. Since it is cheaper to buy a card yourself.
