bubble bobble and rainbow islands

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

bubble bobble and rainbow islands

Post by grittykitty »

anyone a big fan of those games? bubble bobble was my first non pack-in game with my NES when, i remember getting the game for my 6th birthday and i've always loved it. i haven't played it in a while til recently, when i started playing bubble bobble feat. rainbow islands on saturn (too bad it doesn't have a password system like the NES version, or a way to add continues). i was having a tough time with rainbow islands at first, because i was always shooting a rainbow and would end up climbing into right into a enemy. but i've been playing a lot and i got to the last island yesterday, but after i died it said "you can not continue from this world" - lame! but still, a fun game

"Big fan"?

Boy, howdy!

Little known fact: I once even had the world record for Bubble Bobble (arcade version). I'd beaten the old record on the factory defaults by a pretty significant amount, but was demoted to a distant second almost 48hrs later  :D I did close the gap, but I never took first again, and I'm sure that today my hi score would seem foolish.

Well, maybe one day Rainbow Islands will grant me some honor. ;)

Rainbow Island is good as well but I never got good enough to consistently get the 7 diamonds in ORDER...

I just love Bubble Bobble.

How did you keep track of something like that?

It was a week long event at Funspot, before their tournaments went annual. They keep score on hundreds of games. There's plenty of other events every year where hi scores are challenged -- people have kept track of these things for decades.

I kinda knew that, but never really knew the logistics behind it. :)

Well, today there's places like Twin Galaxies who require players to send in extremely elaborate video tapes, showing the system being plugged in and powered on, etc. Or if there is an "official scorekeeper" present, they'll acknowledge that too.

It's tough to say that there isn't some drifter who got the Donkey Kong record at some bus stop in the Nevada desert, but it's assumed that most of the top players are aware of the record keeping by now. Because the scores are so high, you'd have to still play these games religiously to break the records, and probably get advice from the people who hold them.
