So what do you think of the Gamestop PS3 offer?

Post by scottykick »

So gamestop is giving $100 credit off of a 80GB PS3 with the trade in of a PS2 and 3 PS2 games. What do you think of it? My guess is they either suspect a price drop, or PS2 sales are so much better then PS3 sales, that they know they can sell the used PS2 system and games quicker then a brand new PS3.

Still not worth it. PS2 remains a better system. But I agree, they must smell a price drop.

It's not the fact that there's a price drop coming, it's the fact that our PS3 sales for first quarter fell well below corporate's expectations.

Its not to bad of a deal imo but not a stellar one either. The fact still remains as nice a machine as it is it needs more games (although if you have HDTV and want bluray its a deal) bluray to me was overhyped and it lacked games so I sold mine

Bah, this doesn't seem like that great of a deal. PS2 is $100 now, plus you gotta give 3 games away. If you wanna get rid of a PS2, it's best to craigslist it, or sell it here.

I personally love my PS3, but I wouldn't give my PS2 away to get one. (Unless it had BC, and I mean perfect BC... and it could play my burnt games.)

Edit: What is the deal with people not dropping the price of hardware on their own? They only do it when the manufacturers drop it. I mean, if I was sitting on a pile of PS3s, I'd drop the price to $350 myself, just to see what would happen, and then just not buy any more from Sony until demand increased.

Not really worth it.... as far as PS3 being overhyped.... I think that is pretty false. If I have to hear another person with an XBOX claim their system is god's chariot I am gonna lose it. PS3 is a far superior system. More and more games are coming and coming and this year poses to be a very good year as far as games go for the system. Gamestop most likely has some sort of inkling as to what is gonna happen with Sony and if they are going to do a price drop.... which is long overdue in my opinion.

The fact of the matter is that people would rather spend $200 for $100 worth of hardware than $400 for $600 worth of hardware. It's not about value, its about what cost the least.

That's a hard question to answer without knowing the cost that you pay to Sony as a retailer for each system. If the PS3 is $500 but costs the retailer $450 that's only a profit of $50 per unit sold. Not much wiggle room for price discounts of any meaningful quantity. On the other hand, if that PS3 actually costs the retailer $300 then you have the option of slashing to $400. Of course, there's other factors above the raw profit, such as the cost to keep it on a shelf for X amount of time (with X being average shelf life).

I too am tired of people complaining that the PS3 has no good games and is too expensive. I thoroughly enjoy my PS3 and all the games I have. Aside from the first year of release (which is the case for most consoles), I have never found myself in a store and said, "wow, I wish I could spend this $60 on something decent". The opposite is usually more true; I don't have enough money for the games that I find interesting!

That being said, I still think keeping your PS2 is a better deal, especially if you already have a nice PS2 collection since the current PS3's are not PS2 BC.

Yeah, but... the retailers have already paid Sony, right? If they've already paid for the systems, and they aren't moving, then I see no reason not to kill off your current supply and then refuse to restock until demand increases. If you paid $350 for a system and you sell it for $350, you get no profit... but if you keep it at $400 and no one buys it, then you are out $350. No profit is better than being $350 in the red. It's better to slash the price now than wait for a price drop, because if you wait for a price drop, everybody else'll be selling it for $350, and then why should they buy from you?
