Dreamcast S-Video Help

Post by h8b1llg8ts »

I have the Sega Dreamcast Sports Edition and have upgraded to the S-Video because my New LCD doesn't have VGA input. Anyways, I purchased the first set of cables and after I hooked it up the screen would be pixilated black and white. I checked the connection and concluded it was a bad batch.

I just recieved my second set and the samething happened. I know it's not my LCD because the S-Video set for my Saturn work just fine. Any suggestions?

I think there is an older thread on why a vga to component cable wont work. My N64 has a weird S-vid problem too. Everything looks grainy and worse than composite, but the exact same cables work fine on my GC.

I recently had this same problem with my own Dreamcast. My guess is that you bought the cables from ebay or some used games store and that theses cables were also probably gold colored at the tips? Sound familiar? The Dreamcast S-Video cables that seem to be all over ebay and other sites are quite honestly a piece of @$$! Half the time the cable isn't even pinned right or even worse is wired in reverse. These cables weren't manufactured by Sega and are not the original S-Video offered in the days when the DC was still new but rather are a cheap aftermarket knockoff. That being said, I personally went through 3, yes 3 sets of these horrid god awful cables and each time was greeted with a crystal clear, amazing quality BLACK and @#$%&^*%# White picture! I finally did the smart thing, broke down and got myself the VGA Box instead. The great thing about the box is that it allows to hook up your Dreamcast using a regular store bought S-video cable without any problems whatsoever.

h8b1llg8ts: I think what segatari was saying is that most VGA boxs have an S-Video/composite outputs built into them and a switch so you can change between VGA/S-vid. I actually have my DC S-Video connected the same way and it works great.

So to recap I could keep these Crap S-Video's, connect to the VGA box, and out source to composite to my LCD?

the vga box has ports for both s-video and composite out. you could then use a standard s-video cable as opposed to a crap aftermarket DC one.

I misspoke. I have the original composite cable, I meant to say can I run composite to VGA box and out source componet cable?

the vga box plugs directly into your dreamcast, there's no need for the original Dreamcast AV cable.
