Pixels versus Polygons

Post by Cronson »

If you had to choose a style for your games to be created in, how would it be? I'm leaving this open ended, but what graphic style do you think best exemplifies art in video games? Are the limits of the pixel something that forces art through, or with the advent of smoother and more high res textures, is there more room for art in video games? To word it one last way, was art more present in the past history of gaming, or is it becoming more predominant with the future of games?

That's like saying that art wasn't real art until after the renaissance.

It's just a newer updated medium. Like comparing oil to acrylic. Each has their merits, and each has their downfalls.

I usually don't care about which is used over the other. As long as they are used effectively. What I'm more concerned about is the gameplay use of 2d verse 3d because you can still use polygons for 2d. Like Sonic I prefer 2-d, but this doesn't mean it has to be pixel art...

Pixels have a built in nostalgia factor for anyone that was raised on videogames from the early days, but I don't think there is anything objectively better about them. It's just a different approach to game artwork. As with any artistic medium, it's more a matter of what you do with what you have. For example, I wouldn't say oil paints are better than watercolors, but some artists work better in one medium than another and they both have their own distinctive feel. Watercolors tend to work well for having a washed out, dreamy haze and oils tend to have texture and realism.

There's no difference, polygons are simply a different medium and should command an equal respect to that of pixels and vice versa.

Holodeck not included. - Warning: Holodeck may cause headaches, inability to see color, head trauma, risking the chance to have the holograms come to life and kill you, being trapped in a virtual world, and explosive diarrhea.

I think modern machines definatley leave more room for artist expression as the desginers have more choices available to them. They can make the worlds detailed and realistic like Crysis, or use pixel art Mega Man 9, handrawn 2D graphics ala Warioland Shake or any combination that they choose.

Personally I enjoy cell shaded polygons more than any other style.
