I just bought the Orange Box, which is probably cheap enough to be considered poor man material, but if you're too poor to own an X-Box 360 or a decent PC (which I was only about a month ago), then you might enjoy this substitute:
The Flash version of Portal:

It's still a good puzzle game, even if you have Portal... it just has crap graphics.

I had played that a while back. It's a good bit of fun.

Re: The poor man's Portal
I just finished Portal on The Orange Box. I actually enjoyed it more than Half Life 2 and Episode 1(I haven't finished Episode 2 yet). Portal's design is nearly flawless. I only took issue with two puzzles, one of which involved me doing a puzzle to get into a ledge that my character could easily have climbed into by simply sticking her arms up and grabbing the damn thing. Portal is HILARIOUS. I loved the turrets more than anything. It's not quite as challenging as Braid and Crush on the PSP is longer, harder and has more level objectives. Still, portals are a ton of fun to use and the writing is just superb. I may not have been as blown away by Half Life 2 as everyone else, but Portal deserves its praise and it's pretty much as good as Yahtzee said it was. Oh, and it's length is perfect. It sucks when a game drags on for too long. Looks like the achievements for Portal will be a bitch to get, but it looks like the right kind of challenge, unlike some of Half Life 2's stupid episode achievements(one bullet challenge, grub smashing challenge, and Little Rocket Man)

episode 1 sucks. You will have no arguments here. Play Episode 2 though, it is MUCH MUCH better.Gamerforlife wrote:I just finished Portal on The Orange Box. Episode 1 was just a bad move. But atleast they didnt go with the original plan and have you go through most of the game without a gun. One of these days Gordon is going to fix the flashlight on his HEV suit, then we will all be screwed. Episode 2 had some dicy parts, but overall it made up for Episode 1 and then some. The last half is just awesome. But Lost Coast is still one of my favorite parts of Half Life 2.
Portal was an excellent game, but I really dont understand why it blew up to the level it did. I mean after it came out I had people who werent even gamers tell me the cake is a lie. However my opinion of the game is summed up best, yet again, by Gabe and Tycho:

Re: The poor man's Portal
Yeah, I've heard people say Episode 2 is Half Life 2 at its best so I'm giving it a shot. Episode 1 didn't blow me away. It seemed like the whole point of it, from my perspective, is to really make players like Alyx. I think they tried too hard and the fact that she seems to just go hide somewhere when a REAL enemy shows up like a giant Antlion or Gunship, didn't really endear her to me. I'm not saying she's obnoxious or anything, but I don't love her either.
But damn, she has a rather striking resemblance to Jade from Beyond Good and Evil, one of my favorite games ever

Honestly, I've never played through Episode 1. No matter how many times I installed, uninstalled, and reinstalled, it never wanted to run for longer than five minutes. After a long period of these attempts, I gave it up. I've never really felt like I missed too much though.
Now Portal I bought by itself for $5.00, though I've been too busy to play it yet. That will hopefully change over the summer.

Portal is great because you can play in small increments. No need to wait until summer. I've been playing it on bus rides lately on my laptop. I get through one or two levels at a time.

Re: The poor man's Portal
I'm the type who can rarely pick favorites. I can find so many redeeming qualities in so many different titles, whether it be music, film, novels, or games, that picking favorites would feel like sacrilege to the many great titles that exist that I did not name. Nevertheless, if I were to pick my favorite video games, I know that somewhere on that list would be Portal. It's just that good.

They also made a homebrew Portal for the DS, called Still Alive. It's very good; it even has a level editor!
