So my father took me the the shrink for one of those IQ test

Post by RyaNtheSlayA »

You know the real ones? Not the crappy internet ones. Well anyway I got a 147. I am extremely proud of myself. Yet I can't help but feel that score is unwarranted cause I do so bad in school. Maybe im just lazy. Also the shrink classified me as manic depressive :(

Congratulations, your probably smarter than your teachers and for the school system in the United States.

Manic depressive? Now, granted, I don't know you, but I'm guessing this is a bullshit diagnosis. Your a teenager right? Shitty times for most. Its rough and you'll get through it.

You should watch at least the first part of the BBC documentary by Adam Curtis, The Trap, which I'm linking below via Google video. A portion of the first part details how Ronald Laing exposed the joke that most psychiatric diagnosis is.

I did crap through all of high school, but my act score was better than most of my friends, and my sisters (who recently got her phd). Just don't get too bogged down with all the crap in school.
I was bored and cynical all the way though high school, but being able to actually study things that interest me in college I'm actually enjoying myself and doing well grade wise.

Ive watched half of the first episode and It is quite good. I agree that that diagnosis is bullshit but I have been much more unhappy since moving to Denver, considering I was* one of the "popular* kids and now Im the loner with maybe 1 friend that he doesnt even really talk to. I still would just classify that as just me being a social alien to what Denver is like compared to back in Castle Rock.

I've only ever had about seven or so really good friends apart from the guys at work, so I think I came out fine considering my social awkwardness.

But yeah that shrink was giving you a BS diagnosis, remember the economy's in the crapper and they've gotta find a way to make business.

I have no trust in IQ tests. I had to take one in highschool for reasons I will not get into, and it came back as a 41. He retested me with a different test, 181. And a third time with a 60 something. He had no answer, and neither did I.

Generally, I think America likes to kick up a fuss over numbers. IQ tests are a terrible and ineffective way to measure "intelligence".

I would be curious to know my own results, but with the potential for such varied and unexplainable differences I don't really see the point or relevance in getting tested.
