Going to Boston...

Post by Ivo »

Hi guys,

A while ago I had a trip to Philadelphia and asked for hints and tips, not only about games stuff that might be worthwhile to get there that I can't easily get in Europe (for example, last time I got WarioWare: Twisted :) ) but also on generic stuff (I was glad to sample some local "cuisine", such as the cheese steaks of Philly).

So this time I'm heading to Boston, and I'm interested in your knowledge of the city / area, or just suggestions for nice stuff to get in the U.S. (I'm wondering if I should get a new laptop, mine is really old now).
Any nice location I should check out, any particular food I should strive to sample?

Thanks in advance for any hints and tips,
Ivo.

The No Name Restarant right on 25 fish pier rd is fantastic. They have great fish chowda. The Golden Goose and Max's Deli in the financial district have some great lunch food as well.

There is place (chain) called Fire & Ice. Its a mongolian barbeque set-up where you pay a flat fee per person and you fill a plate or bowl with all the items you want (meats, veggies, noodles, rice, etc) and choose your sauce and all the meals are cooked up on a huge skillet in the middle of the restaurant for everyone to watch. the food is amazing and the combinations are endless, not to mention you can have as many bowls and dishes prepared as you like. I'd recommend going for lunch because of the lower price.

Is there any cool arcade left in Boston, or did they all die years ago?

Maybe I could find some nice NGPC stuff, it's not easy to find that stuff in Europe for the most part as it never got released here.

Go to a bar
Make fun of New Englander's innability to pronounce the letter 'r' correctly

PROFIT!

I mean come on, it took me YEARS to stop saying "idear" and start saying "baR" with a fucking R

Don't really have any suggestions. I grew up up there... and I must admit. There is NOTHING to do. I more enjoy heading out to the woods more, that's fun. Boston, Providence, Hartford, blehhhhhhhhhhh. Dirty smelly textile towns. Screw them.

The only cool stuff are the old historic areas with the 17th and 18th century buildings... and well, you're from Europe. What's that joke Eddie Izzard does??? Anyways, Philly and D.C. have MUCH cooler buildings and the sort. I hung at this bar in D.C. called Madam's Organ. We had to smoke on the 1 foot wide rickety wood porch that hung off the front of it. Every step felt like you were going to fall the 3 stories down to the street. It was great! The most I ever did in Boston was watch a lady get her head smashed in by falling debree in the big dig.

So about the city, I've read a couple of references to it being the "Walking City" because it is small and you can get anywhere on foot. Now, from past experiences on the U.S. you guys usually just have these huge places where if you don't have a car you are pretty much shafted (I've still walked, but those were some STRIDES!). Is Boston really compact?

Also, if the place is flat, if it is legally allowed, and if the surfaces are smooth, I could take my folding kick scooter and ride it. If anyone knows how it is in Boston about those kind of vehicles please let me know (do you go in the street with the cars, are there "cycling lanes", do you go on the sidewalk?).

Just remember, everything's bigger in America, including our walks.

While you're there, stop by MIT for me and say hello to the Tech Model Railroad Club, would you? I'd really appreciate it.
