criterion collection esque video game covers

Post by nickfil »

a thread on a board out in the cyber space had people making their own covers for games. Although some of the covers are weak, some are pretty fantastic and very professional. I've always had a bit of a gripe with video game covers. Most of them look the same to me, and almost all are pretty boring. I hope something like this gets people thinking about what covers could be, and hopefully we'll see a change and more thought put into them.

here they are all on one page:

here are just a few I liked from it. More at the link.

You sir have inspired me! I am going to make full covers based on these covers, of course I am not going to copy the whole thing, but I am going to same thing but better and with full cover, like the ones you would see on the Cover Project.

Those are pretty good! I really like the Shadow of the Colossus. It reminds me of the Wages of Fear. They are VERY criterion esc. Yeah I Agree about covers being boring... but then again games don't get re-released so its more of a marketing technique than an art. This really makes me want for there to be some sort of Criterion Game collection, have special features and such.

I think that will happen once we are in a one console future.

I don't really understand what you are trying to say about re-released and marketing techniques. I think you are saying that criterion is a marketing technique of re-releasing movies? Criterion is so much more than that. They release definitive versions with a lot of time and energy put into special features and bonus art.

I think that if the big companies did this sort of thing with "greatest hits" games, the hits would get more respect from the community. How fantastic would it be if you could get kingdom hearts greatest hits with fantastic cover art instead of that stupid clusterfuck of characters on the cover and a bonus dvd or book of guides, concept art, and interviews with developers? Thus making their greatest hits line a prestigious thing rather than something to be avoided by collectors. I would love it.

What I meant is, that Video games don't get re-released(at least most of the time)...
The cover is meant to SELL units not appeal to the hardcore fan base. Thus the best business decision would be to sell a cover that is able to bring brand recognition instead of a cover that looks cool to fans. I understand the whole Criterion re-release concept, they are MUCH more than just re-releases. The movies are given a hell of a lot more content then the original studio DVD and so on. I personally own quite a few Criterion DVDs and they are a great collection.

The Mirrors Edge cover is inspiring. Very nice use of the title and original cover.

I like my covers minimalistic to the point it may sicken most. I find even the original mirrors edge box art to be to busy. I like a black background, a white band across the top of the dvd case with a consistant logo amoung all my games. As well as the title just in nice white. The best looking games i've found are the Atari 2600 carts that have nothing but text.

edit: The Dr. Mario one is actually pretty good.
