Hang in there PS2! We still love you!

Post by J T »

It looks like there are still some good things slated for the PS2, despite being past its prime.

It was just announced that the new Jak & Daxter game will be on PS2 and PSP.

The next in the Shin Megami Tensei series "Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha VS King Abaddon" will be setting records for world's longest video game title when it comes out on the PS2 this May

Guilty Gear XX Accent Core Plus will also be coming out.

The PS2 is also become an "open platform" which will eliminate the old approval process for games to be released, which will allow indie developers the opportunity to create games for the PS2 with more ease. This will also be good for developers in foreign markets like Russia.

Plus, the PS2 is just about to see a price drop-- you will now be able to buy a brand spankin new PS2 console for $100 dollars.

I hope a few people continue to develop the occassional big budget title for the PS2 and that it becomes the new home for indie developers now that it is open and cheaper. I still haven't bought a PS3, Xbox360, or Wii. I'm hoping I can still suck a few more years of life out of my PS2.

PS2 is one of my top five favorite gaming systems all-time. I'm excited the PS2 is still getting great support from developers even after 8+ years. I'm still buying games for the system even 8+ years later since PS2 was launched... The PS2 is an indestructible juggernaut!! 8)

This is very cool indeed. The PS2 came out, when... 2001? It's been in action for perhaps 8-9 years! I'll be interested to see if it can last another decade. :D

I'm really interested in what those indie projects will be like. Hopefully it'll help get some new blood and ideas into the gaming industry.

Overall, I think my PS2 is probably my favorite console. It continues to be the most modern console I own, though that may have to change.

When the new Beatles/Rock Band game was announced it was stated that a PS2 version was part of the mix. Since I didn't own any of the guitar based games, I decided I'd prepare myself because I knew I'd have to have the Beatles version no matter what. I bought the PS2 version of Guitar Hero Aerosmith. The game is okay and, so I thought, I'd be prepared by owning a guitar. I also bought a second guitar so I could play Aerosmith with a friend.

Well, when the Beatles: Rock Band game was more firmly announced the press release distinctly stated it would be for Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii. I wrote a note to the game's producer and though it took them about 3 weeks to respond, they did eventually respond that the game will NOT be released for PS2. Dammit!

So now I suppose I'll have to buy a Wii and when the game comes out buy a copy with yet another guitar (damn those guitar peripherals take up a lot of room). Bastids. At least with the Wii the wife might play some games with me, she sure had a blast when we played Wii Tennis at a friend's house. She's trying to get back in shape so maybe Wii Fit is worth a try too.

The PS2 has recently taken the top spot of my favorite console list. I'll definitely be keeping my eye out for some of the indie games. I'd love to still be playing fresh games on my PS2 in 10 years.

It is being very hard to know which is the ultimate console
WII/360 with their backward compatibility and their arcade, VC, wiiware titles or the ps2 with the ps1 backward compatibility ?
Do you think we will ever see PS3 prices going down, and having top of the line ps3 being backward compatible? I sure Sony does that to save its self. It makes no sense that they did released the first version to do so, and later on they stopped producing them.

I am seriously thinking of owning a ps2.

Wow, sure your the one guy who has not picked up a PS2, so i guess we should thank you, because it is the sole desire of Sony to have a PS2 in the hands of every single gamer, so they have been keeping it alive just so you would cave in and buy one!

Thee Cheers for Kingmohd84!!!!!

But to be serious for a moment, yeah the PS2 is at the top of my list, you really need no other console if you have one, the amount of quailty games on it is inasane, just check out Metacrtic and see for yourself.

Sure new systems with better graphics are out, and there are retro systems that have all those nostolgic favorites, but game for game...nothing comes close to touching the PS2.

It makes me happy to see a great console go on for so long! its great that sony relizes that their are some games that other countrys havent got (many of them great classics). and theres also the factor that not everyone can get a ps3. i hope it keeps on living as best as it can.....because im one of those that cant afford a ps3 lol.

Yeah the PS2 is pretty remarkable. I've had mine since launch (my original one anyway), but I feel bad I haven't pursued a larger library for it. I owned an Xbox last gen as well, and bought a lot of multi-platform games on that instead.

JT, props to your PS1 and NES collections. Mighty fine stuff.
