Old School Female Heroines?

Old School Female Heroines?

Post by onemanfilmcrew »

I'm trying to come up with a list of games that featured Female Heroines. Again, looking for games pre N-64. All I can come up with is the Vallis series and Metroid. Anybody have any ideas?

NES:
Alien 3
Athena
Barbie
Gauntlet (Valkyrie)
Maniac Mansion (Wendy)
Metroid
Mickey Mousecapades (Minnie Mouse)
Ms. Pacman
Super Mario 2 (Princess Peach)
Wurm

SNES:

Front Mission (some female wanzer operators)
Killer Instinct (Orchid)
Mortal Kombat (Sonya)
Mortal Kombat II (Kitana, Mileena)
Mortal Kombat III (Sheeva, Sindel, Sonya)
Street Fighter II (Chun Li)
Super Street Fighter II (Cammi, Chun Li)
Zombies Ate My Neighbors (player 2)

Other than that, there are a bunch of puzzle games or games where you pilot a vehicle where the gender is never specified.

I'm sure there are some that I'm missing that had a female as a selectable character out of many. Surprising how few games have a female hero as the only playable character though.

Pre-64 also means pre-PlayStation and pre-Sega Saturn too, right? So pretty much pre-3D gaming? What about characters from fighting games, or part of a larger cast, like an RPG? What about fighting games with solely female casts?

Sayo-chan, KiKi KaiKai, arcade
Pocky, Pocky & Rocky, SNES
Blaze Fielding, Streets of Rage, arcade
Lt. Linn Kurosawa, Aliens vs. Predator, arcade
Jean, Cacoma Knight in Bizyland, SNES
Maki, Final Fight 2, SNES
Lucia, Final Fight 3, SNES
Ms. Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man, arcade
Princess Toadstool, Mario 2, NES
Sergeant Onaka Kraft, Metal Marines, SNES
Echo, The Peace Keepers, SNES
Sheena, Run Saber, SNES
Catalina Erantzo, Uncharted Waters: New Horizons, SNES
Annie, Wild Guns, SNES
Julie, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, SNES

Then there's film and television properties, like playing Ripley in various Aliens games or Oblina in the Aaahh!!! Real Monsters game.

Aya, Parasite Eve and Jill Valentine, Resident Evil. Both PS1 games.

Have you all forgotten Rosella from King's Quest IV?

If you are counting playstation 1 games, all resident evils, and valkyrie profile as well.

I'm really looking for games where women are the lead character. I'm trying to put together a show highlighting classic video game heroines, but outside of Valis and Metroid I'm having a tough time tracking anything down.

I was going to say the chick from Faria (NES), but then I remembered that she's actually a cursed man, and gets uncursed by the end.

Dark Wizard has two of the four stories you could play as led by female characters, a witch and a knight. The pilot in Pulstar on the Neo Geo is a female (can see her on the opening movie and on the continue screen). In Shining Force Gaiden 2 your team splits up midway through the story, and one of the teams is led by Natasha (she even gets Egress).
