Together Retro: Sega Light Gun Extravaganva

Post by racketboy »

After a little break, we're bringing a new Together Retro installment to you in full force.
Instead of one game, we're taking a look a handful so hopefully more people can get involved.

You can discuss the theme as a whole here and there will be threads for each of the featured games posted soon.

I'm pretty fond of light gun games though I hadn't owned a light gun since Duck Hunt...now I've got a Dreamcast Gun and it seems like a nice time to join Racketboy!

The Saturn cover for Virtua Cop 1 would be better than the "Elite" version for PS2 imo.
If only because it would at least be different from the Virtua Cop 2 cover that's just below :P

Virtua Cop 2 for the DC was not only available as a part of Sega Crap Pack, but also as a Japan-only release (complete with music of course).

Also, the first House of the Dead was available for PC as well :)

I'm really fond of light gun games.

I finished VC1 and VC2 somewhat recently on the Saturn with stock number of credits (after some days of practicing).

One minor "complaint" that I have about these type of games is that they reward memorization more than I would like - with enemies showing up in the same places in each play through and a number of "cheap" really fast shots, you sort of have to get by on memorization more than on raw reflexes and aim (unless you are really, really very good, I think you can't really do well in light gun games on the first times when you still don't know where enemies are going to pop up).

Also, does anyone get physically tired? Keeping the gun up and clicking the trigger so many times I certainly do.

Yeah, my index finger started cramping out...I found that using your middle finger helps with a very nice temporary rapid-fire speed boost but that might just be me....

i filled a saturn gun with sand in an effort to get fucking ripped (on one arm only).

I've mainly been playing ghost squad only because I'm the least familiar with it out of the slew of lightgun games and because there is so much to unlock. However- i'd like to play what everyone else is playing and actually compete with some high scores....

so what are you guys playing? I have a couple high scores for GS, but i don't want to be the only one on the board! heh.

I only have House of the Dead 2 on that list, but my Dreamcast light gun is very poorly calibrated, so I'll either have to buy a new gun or House of the Dead 3 for Xbox. We'll see.

Are any of these games playable on MAME with a PC gun? I actually have the original VC1 and VC2 and a couple of Saturn guns. But I don't want to also get a couple of DC guns, for example...

In any case, does anyone try to play 2 guns at the same time? I tried several times, it's cool but rather hard for me (what tends to happen is I just fire 1 gun at a time... Saves a bit on the reloading and aiming, as each gun covers half the screen).
