The Majora's Mask Weekend Blow Out

Post by chairmanlove »

Hi all, this weekend 4colorrebellion ran a great post opening up Majora's Mask -

http://www.4colorrebellion.com/archives ... dos-fluke/

And we did a follow up over at Toronto Thumbs -

http://www.torontothumbs.com/2009/03/29 ... %99s-mask/

The response to both pieces has really surprised me. People have a lot more to say about Majora's Mask and the various ideas we got into between both sites than I ever anticipated. Because of that, I wanted to make a quick post here, sensing that your retro souls might have even more to say about both articles, and more importantly, the game.

Great articles. Majora's Mask has always been my favorite Zelda title but I've sadly been unable to finish it due to only owning the glitchy Gamecube version.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

I dnt own it... I figured I'd get the GC version, but you say it's glitchy? Guess I'll get it on the Gameboy player!

Huh. Started following TT on twitter recently and actually fave'd your link this post today but haven't yet checked it out. Will check out...

Hearing about the SD storage solution and the upcoming VC release of MM (only console Zelda I've never played) make me want to finally pick one up.

Good luck with that...

Unless you were being sarcastic about owning for the game boy advance, but that would imply that majora's mask was never released for the gamecube, which it was.

It's glitchy meaning flickering/missing polygons, awful sound, a frame rate that often dips to about 10-15 in towns dungeons and other areas with a large amount of objects on screen, random freeze-ups that either cause the game to crash or wipe all your save data, the list of problems goes on and on.

Near the end of the game these glitches all become much more prevalent and annoying which caused me to stop playing after loosing all my data for the third time.

Even though it's being re-released on the Virtual Console I'd say get an original N64 copy for the best playability and bang for your buck.

Mod_Man_Extreme, you said:

I haven't seen any announcement about a North American release (it is the last major Zelda game to be released on the VC) but I have my concerns.

Nintendo didn't port over Ocarina of Time from the N64 to the VC but rather the version from the Master Quest/Collector's Edition discs because it still has that weird sound glitch when you access the menu.

Kind of a weird decision, but I suppose the coding was already done so I hope they take a little more time and care with Majora's Mask this time around. The ability to exit the game and come back to where you start will be nice since the save system took some getting used to.

I've got MM for N64 had it since launch and I hate it. I just couldn't get my head around that time travel mechanic. I keep telling myself I should play it (it's the only Zelda game I haven't completed aside from the CDi games which i'll never likely play due to their obscurity) but every time I end up doing something in the wrong order or spending too much time doing something early on and then getting far in the game and getting stuck.

I'd play with a FAQ but I've never used one to complete a game and I never will. You might as well watch somebody else play the game for you.

I agree completely, Niode, the time-travel schtick is really off-putting until you get used to it.

Some of the dungeons are really, really, hard - not Water Temple hard mind you, but still hard. So you get the keys and other minor items and then when you don't complete the dungeon in under an hour (3 days in-game) you play the Song of Time, warp back to Day 1 and LOSE the fucking keys and items?

Man, I don't use walkthroughs either but I bought the Player's Guide just to get through the damn thing...

These issues are exactly why I don't want to play it. What exact reward is there for playing this game. I mean, playing through OOT was a reward in itself that game lavishes you with experiences that you will always remember. MM not so, it just doesn't seem to be that highly regarded as a defining game in the series, I'd go out on a limb and say that there are probably more people who like Wind Waker than MM (I know I did, I freaking loved that game).

Why should I play it?

I recently played through Resident Evil 2 because I'd never completed a RE game before and decided to force myself through it just so that I can make my own mind up on the game rather than being pissed off at the control system and the limiting play mechanics at the beginning and just giving up. I actually thoroughly enjoyed the game and after getting used to the odd mechanics and the awful control system (which still annoys me but you can sort of see it's advantages and learn to avoid enemies after a while).

So if somebody can give me sufficient argument as to why this game is worth playing through I'll give it a go. I need an excuse to play my N64 again and this sounds like as good an excuse as any.
