Just heard this on another site I frequent.
Apparently Nintendo has a new Wii menu update, Wii System Menu 4.0, that deals with a lot of issues of storage for the Wii.
http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2009/03/ ... n-for-wii/
According to the above article, the update gives allows for a single SD Card to be able to hold up 240 games, allows the Wii to be able to handle high-capacity SD cards, up to 32GB, and for content will be downloadable directly from the Wii shop channel to the SD card AND can be launched and played off the SD card with a short load time (about 4 seconds for Zelda II).
Oh, and they've made it official that Arcade games will now be available for Virtual Console, with Mappy, Tower of Daruga, Star Force, and Gaplus available now. Not the most exciting opening lineup, but this has the potential for great things.

I wanted to be a Teminator but they require you have an armored hyperalloy skeleton and mine's mostly recycled truck tires.

Awesome. Not that I'm near filling my Wii's system memory, but this is good to hear.
Re: Wii Storage Issue Solution?
Also, while I haven't dl'd it myself yet, a friend has and he seems happy with it.
Apparently the largest of the large will only take 10 seconds to load, and the smallest of the small take about 2-3 seconds. Pretty fair considering how effectively it seems to solve the storage problems.
Also, the SD Card menu has 20 pages to organize the games, so it's easy to organize them however you see fit (such as by console for example).

Nice move Nintendo. Not only did they fix the problem they did it without a Nintendo branded accessory and they did it TODAY. Anyone can pick up cheap media of their choice. If you buy a 32gb card you have more storage than a standard Xbox 360. Might be a little expensive at around $100 but hey, Microsoft charges $150 for a giant external ancient technology 120gb HD. That folks is highway robbery.

I read a different article that says what the channel ACTUALLY does is provide a quicker and easier way to shift the data from the SD card to the internal memory. It's a nice improvement (much larger SD cards enabled, easier file management), but certainly not the panacea we were hoping for.

But THAT article could be wrong too. I'll have to get another SD card (I ran out of memory on the Wii the other day, in fact) and try it out.

I want to see how the homebrewers work this. It may be time for that second Wii for homebrew purposes...

I believe it is. I just talked to a friend who downloaded it and he confirmed everything I said.crux wrote:I read a different article that says what the channel ACTUALLY does is provide a quicker and easier way to shift the data from the SD card to the internal memory. Apparently when you've downloaded the update, there's an SD Card icon on the bottom of the screen. Click it and you get a new set of windows/channels like the you have on the Wii proper. And you can play games loaded on to the SD Card, with a slightly longer load time then normal.
This is still pretty great if you ask me. Along with solving most of the Wii's storage issues, it makes it easier to transfer your saves to your PC for backup purposes. Still sucks that all saves are locked so they can only be played on your Wii, but aside from that Nintendo has hit the ball out of the park with this one.
Plus, if you have an SD card already, you don't even need to buy an unnecessary peripheral either.

If I were to go buy a SDHC card for the Wii right now I would buy the 16gig Adata at Newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6820211245
It is less than $30, with shipping, and by the time that is filled the price of 32gig ones will have dropped to around that point. While I would not normally buy an Adata - this is less critical than most other operations I use SDHC cards for.

Cool, but a HDD 2 years ago would have been better. But I'll take what I can get.
