Dreamcast Price Advice...

Post by Cassidy »

Is a Dreamcast loose with one controller & hookups worth $25? My local PNT has one and I'm sitting on the fence.

I've seen them on eBay from sellers for $120 brand new - are these recommended?

I want to get a Dreamcast and am a bit of a completist (I've never thrown out a system box) but $120 new seems like it would have a catch...

FYI, these are the ones I'm talking about - http://cgi.ebay.com/SEGA-DREAMCAST-SYST ... 1|294%3A50

I'd say that is a really fair price, and if you are dead set on having a box you can get here for like 30 bucks shipped

I mean I know its not as sweet as having a fresh system and all, but it way cheaper then dropping 120 for the whole thing.

seems to be what they go for I've seen them go for as high as 40 but I would expect another controller and a VMU for that $$ maybe even a game.

Talk your girlfriend into buying one for you. Mine got it for me as an early birthday present. I had my girlfriend pick mine up complete and sealed on ebay, she paid like 83 dollars. She even scored me a shit load of complete games like mvc crazy taxi bass fishing with the pole.... and a bunch others. It cost her like 125 bucks. I have a nice library of games too. I'm the same way with systems, I want everything complete. Sometimes you need to look around carefully and be patient.

I would never drop more than $10 for a cast unless it had all the cables, a controller and some accessory. I've spent $5 on my sport system with 2 controllers and no cable. $1.25 for one with av cable. $3 for one with rfu and something else.

I've sold them for $30 and $40 with games, cables, and controllers. If you're looking for something complete and no work, I'd still stay under $30 and hope for a vmu and some swag like games and controllers or fishing rod/wheel/mic/etc...

That seems like a fair price.

My wife bought me mine from a local Vintage Stock for about $40 with everything and a 30 day warranty. A bit expensive, yes, but she wanted to get one for me and didn't know where else to look without asking me.

Even though you can snag a Dreamcast cheap, I'd still say that $50 for a good unit is worth the price whether or not they actually fetch that much. The Dreamcast is quickly becoming my favorite system of all time. I'd even go as far to say that the Dreamcast is worth $100, only because it's such a great system.

Hard to believe stinkers like the Jaguar and 3DO rarely fetch under $100 for fine specimens, yet the beloved Dreamcast can be had for as little as $15 complete and in great shape.

But, to get back on track. I think nice complete (not in-box) units go for $15-$30, and that seems fair to me.

Unfortunately the DC was popular enough to have a large install base, therefore a large resale market for people like us, keeping the price down. The 3D0 and Jag were failures, but for people who need everything (like me) supply and demand bumps up the prices. Not saying I would pay anywhere near $100 for either of those systems though

Don't get me wrong, I understand economies of scale, and I understand why the 3DO, Jag, Duo, etc. fetch high prices. I would also love to have those systems being the collector I am.

What I was trying to express was the mental WORTH of the item. While I would love to have a Jag or a 3DO, the DC is a gaming sweetheart and worth nearly every cent you pay for it (to a degree).

I'm rambling again, but what I'm getting at is I feel the Dreamcast will become a "halo" system (like the Jag, 3DO, Duo... etc.) because of the way people still cast it off more than 10 years after its release. The one thing the DC has over these other "halo" systems is the number of quality titles.

I could go on forever, but I am getting tired.

DC = best. console. evar.
