The next step in the evolution of gaming?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

The next step in the evolution of gaming?

Post by glynnahab »

Sorry if it's already been posted. Could virtual reality be where the next-gen consoles go next? Most of you know shitloads more about this kind of stuff than I do, and I'd like to see what everyone else thinks about this.

Be it where videogames are heading or not, at least it does something meaningful with Wii motion controls. Most Wii games seem gimmicky, this could give them more depth.

Actually, I think the next step up will be coming as soon as late this year, and it will be the debut of 3D Tech for home TV's. 3D technology is already being used on PC's, and Steroscopic TV is the first step in the move towrds Virtual Reality. Take motion controls from the Wii add in 3D images and your already almost 1/2 way there

I've been wanting something like this for a long time for racing games. I'm assuming most people never thought of this but in some games you can switch to cockpit display. The problem with this is you can't see to your side so it's hard to play and takes away from the experience. With something of this sort you could turn your head and it would turn the Virtual characters head and you could look around in your car.

But who's going to move the TV?

I just watched Coraline with my daughter this past weekend. I must say, videogames would benefit greatly from the 3D tech Pixar uses. I think a certain scale of 3D VR is upon us in the near future. Maybe put on wireless special glasses that links to the console that changes the colors and textures of your environment. Imagine your home turning into a scene in Silent Hill or Fatal Frame. Adding virtual ghosts or a psycho killer, monsters chasing you through your home. Trying to solve certain puzzles and riddles. The shapes of objects would have to be the same when viewing through the glasses to avoid tripping and such. And don't get me started on multiplayer options. I think the tech for great 3D will be there very soon.

While VR might be neat I don't think it will ever be a major feature in gaming.

When I think of gaming, I think of it as a disconnect from society (just a bit), the last thing I want to do is strap on 40 lbs. of gear, or go to a special room, or HAVE TO MOVE AT ALL (Wii, I'm looking at you!).

While I like my Wii, I can't stand playing it for more than a few hours with friends unless the game has little/no motion controls.

I will choose every other system I own over the Wii simply because I am lazy and I don't want to be given a job when I play games. I'm not saying I'm a mindless drone, but I love the "disconnect". I guess what I'm saying is the very mechanism used to make the game feel more immersive actually causes you to be more aware you are playing a game which, in turn, takes away from the experience.

Probably the reason I like retro consoles so much... Power On. Pickup Sticks. Go.

Just my $.02
Systems: Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar, NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii, Genesis 3, Genesis 2, 32X, Sega CD (model 2), Saturn (model 1), Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox (Modded), Xbox 360, GameBoy, GBA SP, Game Gear, PSP... always adding more
