What, their lack of a good come back or the fact that Kutaragi said "We don't care"?
Sony's said similar things for the last 6 years... it's all a front. Seriously, if Sony didn't care - they would not be using good features from the competition's "arsenal". Sony cares as much as any company with competition, but they're not gonna admit to it - especially when they're on top.
This is tantamount to Nintendo telling the press how Wii and DS are separate from PS3/360 and PSP simply because their "philosophy" is different from that of the competition. Is it real? Not at all. They're in the same market, no matter the audience all 3 consoles and both handhelds tend to cross paths with each other because of that.
Not to mention, it's all rosey colored and "oh we're different" now, but when Nintendo sells more than its competition the first thing in their speeches and sales reports are about how they outsold the competition (DS vs. PSP being a glaring example of this).
They're the first to deny competition and the first to bring up the fact that they "beat" said competition when they sold out.

spat out was clearly a sign of worry...
It's really a sign of a company who has been and continues to be arrogant to the pres. It's hardly a sign of worry. It's arrogance, it's what Sony is. They're on top and they have no "need" to care about MS or Nintendo. They have after all sold close to 200 million PlayStation consoles so far, excluding the PSP. They're the only console manufacturer who has a current-gen console that has a healthy future when it comes to games, one that outsells a next-gen competitor on a weekly basis and will continue to sell for atleast another 1-2 years.
Sony doesn't have to worry about selling consoles for the forseeable future, PS3 will sell out at launch despite the price, PS2 will continue to sell, and PSP despite being behind DS does sell enough to warrant support.

Um, you are aware that picture wasn't taken when he was asked the question - right?
The future of Sony doesn't depend on the PS3, Sony will certainly lose money if the PS3 loses - but Sony isn't going to go broke because of PS. Sony still earns hundreds of millions, if not billions annually from all of its divisions. Contrary to what people say, the gaming division isn't the only one that turns a profit.
Even if PS3 doesn't reach #1, Sony wins. Sony doesn't need 100 million PS3s out there, 30-40 million is enough to make blu-ray the next-gen optical media standard. A loss for its gaming division = a win for Sony as a whole. No matter how you look at it, Sony at #2 this generation is enough for them to get away with their long-term goal.
