Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object

Post by brickiemart »

A new Touhou demo for a new Touhou game is coming out soon. The game's name appears to be "Undefined Fantastic Object" and some screen shots can be seen here.

General thoughts, are you guys big Touhou fans? My early theory is that the game will follow the same style as Mountain of Faith and Subterranean Animalism in that it will start you with two lives and infinite continues. However continuing will start you at the beginning of the level instead of where you left off. Hopefully the soundtrack will rock.

I've never ordered from them, but this online shop has a pretty incredible selection of Doujin games, including Kamui and a couple of Touhou games.

I'm sure they'll get copies of the new title when it is released. I'd be interested in hearing any personal experiences with them.

Himeya Shop is pretty much the best/only way to get these games here, short of actually attending Comiket/Reitaisei in person.

I still suck at ZUN's games, but I've played and loved every single one of them. Of course I'm excited at this new one.

Though I gotta admit I'm more interested in the soundtrack these days.

Just an FYI to fans, the demo is out and several download links and videos are on this webpage. I'm dowloading now, but have to go to work, so it wil be several hours before I can test and comment on any of the new Touhou goodness.

Edit:
P.S. The megaupload link works. Also, I am late for work. :)

Bicklemart beat me to it - demo is out, and Ive only got to play up to the first miniboss thus far (out of practice and time). It is typical Touhou - awesome music, gorgeous graphics and gameplay, and hard.

I've given it a fair shake. I made it to the stage three end-boss, I choked on stage two several times while I made it half-way through the boss on stage three on the first go. Sometimes Touhou games are like that.

Mini-review: this game has taken out some of the elements of Animism. You have a life and bomb meter, bombs no longer take away from your firepower. You start with two of each, completing a stage without dying means an extra bomb, not an extra life like Animism. Continues seem unlimited, but you start at the beginning of the stage.

Graphics look nice by Touhou standards. Zun has used a different color palette from the previous games to give this game its own set of distinct images and character. All the bosses seem new. (I'm not a hardcore enough Touhou nerd to know character names and story continuity), they seem to have typical quirky personalities that I will never know until an English patch is made. The boss music seemed ok while the stage music stood out to me as catchier thus far. Spell cards (bullet-patterns) seemed bland for most of the first two stages. They do get interesting by the end of stage two and all of three. And I do mean interesting.

Undefined Fantastic Object seems to refer to some objects that look like UFOs which some enemies drop. They remind me of the bells in the Twinbee series, they even change color after floating on the screen for a few seconds. Once you get three a big UFO appears with a timer and energy bar. If you kill it an explosion happens and you get points. That's all I can figure out about it from the demo, there's probably more to it.

Not a bad start so far. My predictions are that it'll be good, but just shy of great.
