Hello
I have been thinking a lot about starting my own business, because I do not see myself working for someone else. I just can't stick to certain working times. Sometimes I just don't feel like doing anything which causes a problem in any work place.
Having my own business will let me have that option. I know that having your own business means a lot more work and a lot more risk, but if I decide not to work today am the one who is going to lose , so its my choice to do whatever I want with whatever I have.
If any one of you run, or did run, his own business or helped running someone's else business and having any experience to share I would be more than happy to listen. I most wonder about how to do the book keeping and the payroll how, and how to set up the business. But am open to anything about the subject.
Business discusion
Re: Business discusion
Well, I wish you luck and success. One word of advice though, if you want to be able to just take the day off whenever you feel like it don't open a brick and mortar store. Maybe if you do some research and find some good distributors you could open an ebay store or something...that way if you don't do anything one day orders can still come in. In general though I just don't see that work ethic being the cornerstone of any successful business. I'm not judging you, just giving an honest opinion.
Re: Business discusion
Yeah, in the initial period of owning your own business you're going to have to do all the work. So you actually have to spend far more effort than just working for someone else. If you manage to take off and get some employees then you start getting the option of taking the day off once in a while, but you still probably want to be there every day you can, to ensure proper operation.

Re: Business discusion
Man... I get the summers off, but still have to work during the summer too... I get days off, but I still end up working. Good luck finding the right job.
Re: Business discusion
Yeah, it's a ton of work in the beginning.
If you have a store, at least make sure part of it online. Being local-only is quite limiting.
I know a lot of local stores that do quite nice business online.
Make sure it's something you enjoy too. You need some extra motivation to help you through the tough spells.
Oh and read some books by Seth Godin. I love his stuff.

Re: Business discusion
What kind of business were you thinking of?

Thanx for all the input

I know it wrong work ethic, but I want to keep the choice. Its my choice to hurt my own business right? When you work for some one else, its so wrong specially that he is paying for your work time, that is why I still look for a job.

googling Seth Godin right now

There is nothing in particular, its not that I am following my dream to make my hobby a business. It is more like whatever is going to make money.
There is some stuff I am totally skipping like tobacco , alcohol, and anything media like music, movies, tv shows, magazines and out of all things videogames.
I am also skipping on stuff where you have to sell yourself. You know the types of business where you lie to people just to hire you. Like business consultancy, real estate broker, business research companies.
I like to deal more with commodities, actual buying and selling.
btw, this is from me to share back to you.
DO NOT read anything of this motivational business crap they sell. They seem to always be the best selling books, and they are the least useful. They teach nothing. They are always like "you can do it" , "there is nothing impossible" ,"Look for your own talent" . Its total crap you never learn anything of the practive or what to do. This stuff is like Rich Dad Poor Dad and 1 minute millionaire. Trust me, do not even bother unless you want something to hype you up or give you hope. Any one can write that kind of stuff.

I run my own Guitar Tuition business in the evenings and weekends. I'm working quite a lot of the time. If I'm ill I lose out on money and when you get paid £20 p/h to teach guitar I sure as hell ain't taking any time off. I hate being ill because it loses me money.
If you are wanting to set up a business where you can just sit back and do nothing when you feel like it, then prepare to have a very unsuccessful business. If you aren't motivated to work for somebody else, how do you know you are motivated to work for yourself?

Unless you can offer something so rare that potential customers can't get what you offer anywhere else and it's something they REALLY want then not being available when the customer wants it will pretty much make your business a failure. There's a reason they call it customer SERVICE. Typically a potential customer won't wait around until it is convenient to YOU to do business, they will simply go to one of your competitors.
My best suggestion is for you to start small and learn how difficult it is to make a living at it before you bet the farm on attaining the success you obviously aren't committed to working your tail off to acheive. I'm not trying to be harsh, just trying to be honest. It's a tough world out there and whether you work for yourself or someone else, being a "I'll work when I feel like it" slacker won't get the rent paid.
Ow! My small intestine!

I'm going to tell you something that you probably haven't heard much before, but you need to hear it.kingmohd84 wrote:I do not see myself working for someone else. I just can't stick to certain working times. Sometimes I just don't feel like doing anything which causes a problem in any work place.
You sometimes feel like not doing anything? Guess what, so does the rest of the world. The difference is that in the real world you don't get a choice. I've had many mornings when I didn't feel like going into the office. But I still go, because that's how the world works. You are not special. Join the work force and contribute like the rest of us.
