Sega CD Not Powering On

Post by lisalover1 »

My Sega CD has recently stopped powering on. I had just attached my new 32X last night, but when I tried to play a CD game, nothing happened. No access light or anything. I heard that plugging an NES power adapter to your SCD would blow the fuse, which I think might have been what happened. I used different power cords, checked the Genesis-SCD connection, tried disconnecting my 32X, but nothing worked. It worked fine before, and my Genesis and 32X still work fine, but what could have happened to my Sega CD? Any ideas? If so, how can I fix it?

You probably blew the fuse. Pretty common on both the Sega CD1 and 2.

Was it caused by the NES adapter? What can I do to fix it? I looked up a tutorial on how to fix it. It says to replace the F301 fuse on the Model 2 SCD board. I have a model 2, and there's nothing on the board labeled F301.

EDIT: I found F301 on the bottom of my board, but how do I fix the fuse?

More than likely. I'm not sure of the output of an NES adapter but most SCDs are burned by using the wrong adapter.

There are plenty of threads with photos and links to how to locate and fix the fuse in question so do a search on the forums. Once you locate the fuse, try temporarily bypassing it with a wire and USING THE CORRECT adapter, see if it will power up. If not, you have bigger issues and it might be best to just buy another unit.

I can't find any guides that show how to actually solder the fuse. I saw a few guides on how to find the burned fuse, but no actual soldering guides. Can you give me a link to one?

If you don't know how to solder or don't own a soldering iron or soldering gun, you might want to leave it to someone else. If you want to buy a gun or iron, it's pretty easy to do with a little practice. I'd still suggest testing the unit by jumping past the fuse to make sure that is even the issue.

No, I know how to solder, and have a soldering gun, I meant that I want to know the specific locations on the PCB on which to solder the bypass fuse.

EDIT: I followed a tutorial, and it still doesn't work. I soldered the new fuse to both ends of the old fuse tabs, and it still won't power on. What does this mean, and how can I fix it?

It means it is more seriously damaged than just the fuse. You'd probably be money ahead to just buy another unit.

How would one jump past the fuse. I have soldering equipment just not really any experience with circuit boards. I have a model 1 scd that came with the wrong adapter, so I would like to test if this is the problem

Nevermind. I did it. I got it to work, and then replaced the fuse. The music then you first turn on the system was surprisingll much cooler than the Model 2 music.
