Re: Is it true: Using CDR on dreamcast will kill it
"backups will kill your console" is a myth perpetuated by collecting purists for years.
I've been using CD-R's since I've gotten my DC, with no problems at all.
Re: Is it true: Using CDR on dreamcast will kill it
Don't listen to these guys. They just want you to break your DC! Using CD-Rs will cause condensation to build inside the console. After long use the console will start to spark and set on fire. Then soon you'll have a whole mess of fire on your ass.
Don't listen to them! CD-Rs are bad for your DC!!

Re: Is it true: Using CDR on dreamcast will kill it
The frequency at which a CD-R spins is slightly different from how a regular DC game sounds. It emits a high-pitch whine, imperceptible to human ears, or even that of our domesticated animal friends. However, this whine closely resembles the singing voices of two single-foot-tall twins, and will summon the mighty guardian, Mothra.

It does seem like they work the system harder (and I've heard of DC's dying in good numbers at 7 years old) but I wouldn't worry to much about it consider the systems are cheap and many of the games are not. However then you have to consider the limited (somewhat) number of consoles and possible repairs.
