Atari had like 2 games I actually liked
Pitfall RULES!
Other then that though... yeah it wasn't until NES/SMS that I got really interested.

I never had my own Atari 2600, but I was lucky enough to have neighbors who owned one, including a copy of ET. The console does have an over abundance of shovelware on it due to a complete lack of licensing and quality control, but there are some interesting titles on there. Heck, survival horror fans who own one can look up titles like Haunted House and Halloween, or even the pretty shoddy Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
It may be old, but nearly every genre that had been invented at that point had something on it(notable exceptions being fighting games, created in 1978 with Warrior, but didn't really see home computer or console ports until after the Atari 2600 had fallen out of popularity). There are some good games there, you just have to look for them.

The NES came out in the 80s. Perhaps you were thinking of the 70s?
I never had an Atari 2600 the first time around, but it's one of my favorite systems. Nothing gets you into the zone quite as easily as a 2600 game. It's just the simplicity of it all that makes it really nice to play. And if you get tired of one after 5 minutes, there's a ton of other games to tryout.
If anything, it's worth having an Atari 2600 for Breakout. Nothing comes with paddle controllers anymore.

I was born in 1990 and I LOVE arcade games from the 80's. My favorites are Tempest, Centipede, and Missile Command. The Atari VCS version of Battlezone is pretty fun too.

Re: Anyone else not like gaming in the 80's?
I can relate to what holabeck is saying. I certainly like and play many of the 80s arcade games, but for whatever reason I have never really gotten into many of the early 80s home consoles. I never get the urge to play atari or colecovision, etc. With me it all started with NES. Perhaps its related to my age (32) and the fact that NES was the first console I owned.
Consoles: Wii, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, Xbox (x3), Gamecube (x3), Playstation 2 (x2), Dreamcast (x2), Nintendo 64 (x2), Playstation 1 (x3), Saturn, SNES (x2), Sega 32X, Sega CD, Genesis (x4), Gameboy Color, NES.

Anayo, you ought to pick up some real arcade controls and play with MAME for those games. Even with the 2600 trackball, Missile Command and Centipede aren't that great. This is because the 2600 trackball just acts like a joystick, it's totally digital underneath.
I got an X-arcade trackball which I use with MAME for missile command and centipede. It's absolutely fantastic. I still need to put together a spinner for Tempest, etc. though. Also, if you like Battlezone, try it out with a PS2 controller on MAME. Dual thumbsticks imitate the arcade's dual joysticks really well.

I don't care for many 2600 games, at lesst not once I played the arcade equivalents. Some of them did a pretty good god though, joust, gravitar, and battlezone are still pretty fun. I also like Berserk.
