Well, i know I'm late to the party and all, but I just ripped into SC4 a couple of days ago to stave off cravings for SFIV. While some things tick me off about it (The Apprentice is so f'en broken, no Fire Emblem-esque mode, no tag-team for Versus fights, many fighting styles taken out, etc.), I really am completely transfixed by the Create A Character mode. It's been so long since I've played around with such a thing and it is really improved over SCIII (despite nixing so many fighting styles), and I've always loved these things ever since I got WWF Warzone for PSX (Which, btw, I only got for the Custom Wrestler deal. Never been big on TV wrestling, but I'll make an exception if I can have Captain Lou Albano decked out in his Mario Super Show outfit wrestling The Incredible Hulk.)
Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone here has made any custom characters. I'm up to 21 right now in SC4; granted, most are just recreations of customs I have seen on message boards, but I have made a few recreations of my own that I'm pretty proud of, such as Lina Inverse and Naga the Serpent from Slayers. As far as retro gaming is concerned, I've also made Terra (FF6), Ryu and Nina (BOFIII), and Galford (SSII). Lina and Terra look so close to the source material that at some point, I'm going to have to figure out a way to post pictures. I also have a large amount of customs on SC3 and WWF Attitude for DC (If I can ever find the damn memory cards). Hell, I even had a large amount of custom palette-swaps from Capcom vs SNK 2.
Anyway, I'm just wondering if anybody else out there has made recreations of their favorite retrogaming characters for whatever game is your poison of choice. (Or non-retrogaming... just bonus points if they are.) I know a lot of people think custom character-modes are stupid, tacked on and provide no real entertainment... but if that's the case, why do I have so many wrestling games? =P
Pics would be swell. I love looking at how Character A transitioned to Game B.
Custom Characters?
Re: Custom Characters?
Haven't gotten to play SC4 yet since I require a power drill and a specific bit to fix my 360. I have made an incarnation of Chun Li in every game that I've played that's had one up to this point though...think it's possible?
Re: Custom Characters?
Oh yes, most definitely. I've already seen a few Chun Li's on the interwebs; some barely passable, but one in particular I remember seeing and saying "Wow. That's Chun Li, no question about it."
Unfortunately, I haven't got a working router, so I can't take my SC4 on the net and download the costume pack I have a free coupon for. (Came with the Premium Edition.) I sure as hell won't pay for costume stuff unless they are super-cheap; there's already plenty of potential with what is already unlockable from the disc.

Re: Custom Characters?
Well, I decided to try and post pictures of my creations, even with my only way of doing so being with my cell phone. (In other words, WARNING: BAD PHOTO QUALITY!)
Considering the type of site this is, we'll start off with my creations based on classic game characters. Each character's first link is the pic of the character, followed by the details page that should help you recreate them.

Re: Custom Characters?
I did some stuff for CVS2 on Dreamcast. Excuse the obnixious watermark I put on it way back when.

Re: Custom Characters?
Very nice, though the second Terra image isn't coming up. Do you take requests? Could you use Seung Mina to create Kyoshiro from Samurai Shodown? In fact, do they have facial designs like that? Kabuki makeup or Noh masks? I'm pretty interested in their system now.
Re: Custom Characters?
Yeah, they do have a few (quite a few, actually) Kabuki masks. I'm not sure if they have one to make Kyoshiro, but I'll see what I can do.
Edit: Oh yeah, I also have quite a few anime characters; Guts, Casca and Griffith from Berserk; Lina, Naga and Gourry from Slayers and Yoruichi from Bleach. I also just made Sakura from Street Fighter Alpha after downloading the Premium Costume Pack.
Mozgus: Yeah, I played around with CVS2's edit mode a bit too. I think I had Kyosuke looking like Dante, if I remember correctly. Also made Mai look like Elena, and made evil versions of Ken and Dan. I like the matching Ryu/Gouki and zombie Kyosuke =)
Fixed the link, btw.

Re: Custom Characters?
Haha, I too made guts and caska in SC3. So how is SC4's character creator any better? I played SC4 for the first time today at a friend's and it seems like kind of a lackluster package compared to 3 so far. Not a lot of modes or anything.the7k wrote:Yeah, they do have a few (quite a few, actually) Kabuki masks. I'm not sure if they have one to make Kyoshiro, but I'll see what I can do.

Re: Custom Characters?
The character creator is definitely improved. The ability to modify physique and muscular build allows characters to look like more than just clones with different hairstyles, skin tones and clothes. Still wish there was a way to modify height directly. Physique does somewhat do that, but I still can't make certain characters as small or tall as I want them to be (For instance, May from Guilty Gear or Zodd from Berserk.) Even if they'd only allow them to be as small or tall as Talim and Algol, it'd be a great addition.
The other thing that leaves me scratching my head is how they got rid of the custom character fighting styles. I used a certain Naked Snake a lot in SCIII, and it actually felt like I was using Snake due to the Knife style (It was practically CQC), but now every custom character has to reflect an official character. I know some of those custom styles like Sickle and Sword & Shield were redundant, but Knife, Lance, Fan and a few others really should have stayed.
Anyway, the character creator itself is much better. It sucks that they charge for certain items, but almost anything you want can be unlocked. All of the official Soul Calibur characters are even built with the parts in the create-a-character mode, so it isn't like in SCIII where real characters would wear crap that you can't. You can modify the body's actual apparence, which is really all they needed to do. The ability to modify you voice by making it faster or slower is a great addition too.
On the whole, however, SC4 is lacking. It's only lacking one thing, actually. Chronicles of the Sword. For whatever bone-headed reason, they decided to nix what I believe is the best single player campaign a fighting game has ever had. There is some new Tower of Lost Souls that is just a bunch of trails that you have to undergo to unlock stuff, as well as a survival mode. The Story Mode is kinda interesting, but it won't keep you near as occupied as CotS in SCIII. Also, the online, which could have been SC4's saving grace, is flooded with people who have obviously played the game to the point where you can't even enjoy yourself. Just enjoy watching your character be juggled from full to zero health. You'd think that, going into non-ranked matches, you'd find non-cheap people, but no.
If you can find some people to play against that you know, maybe you wouldn't have to deal with that crap. I know I can get a fair game with friend I play with in my living room, but that's about it.
Oh yeah, the Star Wars characters. I have the PS3 version; Vader is actually a pretty solid character that isn't too far removed from Mitsurugi. Anytime I ever see someone play as him, I don't think anything about it because he isn't cheap. The Apprentice, on the other hand... Holy F'en God, he is broken. He may be more broken than Algol; I know I don't care when someone picks Algol, but when someone picks The Apprentice, it always pissed me off. The fact that you have to fight him in Arcade mode pisses me off too. They do a good job of keeping the Star Wars characters away from Soul Calibur characters in Story Mode, which I was very glad about, but then they "force" (Hyuk Hyuk) 'em in Arcade mode.
