vertical or horizontal?

Post by bennythejet »

In my younger playing days i always used to prefer horizontal shooters. They just seemed a bit easier to me. They had much slower gameplay and always looked nice. End of level bosses were always very different with lots of imagination put into them.

Nowadays, my favourite by far, is of the vertical variety. Most of the gameply enhancements and 'gimmicks' have been done in the vertical shooter. Although i love just a normal, traditional shooter, it's always interesting to see what new ideas games developers come up with. Cave have been wonderful in this respect. I know their games are all very similar, but they seem to have at least one different, redeeming feature that innovates gameplay-wise.

Verticals are faster and also seem to require more skill, with much more scope for bullet-dodging, in my opinion.

So what do you guys prefer? Vertcal or Horizontal???

Vertical for me, I generally prefer bullet hell games and most of them are vertically orientated (with the obvious exception of Progear).

Why settle for one or the other? Play Salamander and get both in a single game.

Hell yeah, Salamander!

I tend to lean towards Horizontal, probably because Gradius III for the SNES was the first SHMUP I've ever played.

I've got the same mentality. Gate of Thunder is my favorite game of all time, so the horizontal scroll has a place in my heart. Of course, the sea level does scroll vertically for a bit (you're still shooting horizontally)
