DS Titles for a young girl

Post by RemyC »

My little sister is turning 8, and Im looking to pick up a game or two for her DS. Im looking for titles that could help develop some motor skills for her...she has very terrible coordination.
Super Princess Peach has caught my eye.
Are Brain Age, and Big Brain academy too advanced for an 8 year old? I have never seen them.

Would it be possible to get a list?
Keep in mind that I have most of the SNES titles that were ported over.

Brain Age has some complicated games in it, but you don't have to play them if you don't want to. Super Princess Peach is a good one. Falling in a pit is Zelda LttP style (lose a bit of health), which eases frustration for younger kids. WarioWare Touched would probably be good for coordination and reaction, since you get about 5 seconds to react to what they want you to do.

My little sister around that age really enjoys Mario Kart DS (and is good enough to beat me sometimes). I'll give her a call in the next couple days to see what else she has, because I can't quite remember.

Drawn to Life is probably a good choice. I found it to be way too easy, but I think it'd be great for a kid, especially one who doesn't have the best coordination like your sister. Besides, the real fun is in drawing the characters and objects. I would also suggest WarioWare . Other than that, maybe look into puzzle games? There are so many good ones on the DS, you're bound to find one that might suit her.

There's a game series similar to the Brain Age series of games called Brain Boost. It's like Brain Age or Big Brain Academy, but simpler. That might be an accessible series for an either year old. I have Brain Boost: Beta Wave.

My little girl, who is also 8, really enjoys cooking mama 2 which in case you didnt know is a basically a bunch of mini games involving rubbing the sytlus on the screen in different ways. Its actually pretty cool, with some very japanese artwork and the mulitplayer is pretty good as well

I'll go ahead and recomend Soul Bubbles - it's a really enjoyable adventure game with cute & charming graphics where you have to herd Souls from one end of the level to the other. There are about 8 different areas consisting of 5 levels each, and while the difficulty increases substantially towards the end, the game explains everything in a concise and understandable manner. Each new level introduces a new aspect of controling the souls that will help you progress, first you are given the ability to 'draw' bubbles around the souls making them easier to transport, then you get a tool that allows you to split the bubbles, and then a tool that allows to to inflate/deflate the bubbles etc. Later on in the game you'll encounter enemies that need to be dealt with, but the first few levels mostly just concentrate on exploring the maze-like levels and figuring out some basic (yet well explained) puzzles.

Overall i'd highly reccomend Soul Bubbles to DS owners of any age, the game isn't hectic and can be played at a sedate pace, controlls brilliantly and features beautiful graphics, plus it takes a simple concept and then expands on it ten-fold all the while perfectly explaining itself so as to avoid player confusion.

I think thats next on my list for DS games for myself. Its quite hard to find in the shops though and from the things that I hear people say about it it in 10 years it will become one of those elusive gems that people like us talk about and pay over the odds for.

I recommend Nintendogs, New Super Mario Bros, and Tinkerbell.
