Made some good progress on my summer games this weekend, decided it's time to focus fully on these and take some out!
First off, I finished Saturn Bomberman. Thoughts below:
The game is short and it only took a single sitting. It's also fairly easy - the easiest of the 3 Bomberman games I've beaten for sure (Those being Bomberman '93 for TG16, Mega Bomberman aka Bomberman '94 for Mega Drive and Saturn Bomberman). However, it was a lot of fun. As usual, once you have the line bomb power up you're golden, especially hen you start adding all the other power ups to it - remote controlled bombs, a dinosaur for an extra hit, hearts for even more extra hits, the ability to walk through bombs and blocks...
The new dinosaurs aren't as good as the louies from previous games, but they're still cool. They can be levelled up as you play, but mostly the ones that are bad at level 1 still suck at level 3, and the ones that are good at level 1 don't really need the extra bonuses, but the're nice at least.
From worst to best, imo: Purple dinosaur - lets you set off bombs and see items inside blocks - not useful as I had remote bombs and blew up everything anyway.
Yellow - could stun enemies, but it never lasted long enough to be useful. Could be good in multiplayer though. Higher levels make the stun area wider, but it still sucks.
Green - Can run fast in a line until it hits a wall. Inferior to the green louie from mega bomberman in every way as it's slower and gets stunned for a sec when it hits the wall. It's the only one that really benefits from levelling though, as at level 2 it can stop itself before it hits a wall, and at level 3 it can turn whilst running.
Pink - Can jump. Lasts just long enough to clear a bomb blast in a pinch and can jump over soft bombable blocks. At level 2 it can jump over solid blocks too, and at 3 it can jump over the arena edges to come out the opposite side, which isn't very useful tbh. This is probably the best one in multiplayer though.
Blue - can kick bombs over blocks. Very useful before line bomb, and quite useful after as it can hit enemies in some spots without releasing others.
I also played some multiplayer as well as story mode. It's a lot of fun, and 10 player is wondefully chaotic. I like the other hudson characters available as options, though I wish they had still kept the variety of bombermen from earlier versions.
I can see why Saturn Bomberman is the definitive Bomberman game to many, and it's definitely pretty great. My preference may slightly lean to Mega Bomberman though. I might be biased by nostalgia, but I enjoyed the more challenging design of single player, and though there was more variety in multiplayer arena design. Still, Saturn Bomberman is a must have for the system imo.
Today I also put a good few hours into Final Fantasy VIII aswell. I started off on the way to Trabia gardens, made it through Galbadia Gardens and am now on my way to find the White SeeD ship to locate Ellone on disc 3. I've passed the story revelation everyone hates. It was dumb, but I've gone along with far worse in an RPG before and it doesn't really offend me like it does some people. I', 43 hours into this game, and howlongtobeat puts at about 55. I think I may be behind their estimates by some way, considering I still have 2 discs to go!
Lastly, once I'd had enough of FFVIII for the day, I got stuck into another of my summer games list - Banjo Tooie. It's still as charming and fun as the first game, but it took a surprisingly long time to let me get started - lots of cutscenes and talking to people at the start of the game, all of which is basically to tell me why I'm collecting all this crap this time around. It's all amusing and fun though, so I didn't mind too much. This game has a much darker sense of humour than the first, thats for sure.
Anyhow, I cleared out the first world (Mayahem Temple) completely - all Jiggies, Notes, Moves, Cheato pages, Glowbos, Honeycomb pieces, whosits, whatsits and all the other stuff. Good old Rareware, never knew when to call it quits on the collectathon, and I love it. Now I'm halfway through Glitter Gulch mine, and I have Witchyworld open and ready for after that too.
My goal is to get 5 of these done by the end of the month, 6 if I'm lucky. FFVIII and Banjo Tooie will bring it to 4, and I plan to start MGS3 whilst on holiday too. The potential 6th game would likely be Curse of Monkey Island as it'll be nice and quick to power through.
1. Super Mario Bros 2 (WiiU VC)
2. Super Mario World (SuFami)
3. Yoshi’s Island (SuFami)
4. Contra III (SuFami)
5. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PSN)
6. Golden Axe III (Steam)
7. Mega Man X (SuFami)
8. Wild Arms (PSN)
9. Gunstar Heroes (Steam)
10. Silent Hill (PS1)
Well, it really looks like I've softlocked Wild Arms ><; Reaaaally lame. I'm really don't want to restart it right now (just thinking about doing everything AGAIN kind of irritates me) but I'll still be giving it another chance... one day.
Not sure if I should replace it with a different game or not, but either way I don't really have any classics that I can play right now. Technically I could play Gunstar Heroes or Golden Axe III but playing those with a keyboard would be... interesting? So unfortunately it's going to have to wait until I move in a few weeks :/ Oh well, at least then I should be able to play nearly all of my games again (instead of barely any).
^Hm, I mean I guess I could, but that would still mean I would be doing a lot of the stuff I've already done and I'm still going to be a bit annoyed by that. I think I'm going to need to let it sit for a little bit before I can be not annoyed with it unfortunately ><;
Been making more Banjo-Tooie progress. I'm at 39 jiggies now, out of a possible 90. I'm actually more than halfway done though, as I have more than half of the Cheato pages, Honeycombs, Jinjos and other stuff that is collectable in this game. I've also got a lot of the powers I need to go back and pick up a few fairly easy jiggies in earlier levels.
My totals so far:
Isle o' Hags: 4/10 jiggies
Mayhem Temple: 10/10 Jiggies
Glitter Gulch Mine: 7/10 jiggies
Witchyworld: 5/10 jiggies
Jolly Roger's Lagoon: 7/10 jiggies
Terrydactyland: 6/10 jiggies

Yep. That's the whole reason I couldn't get into any of Rare's platformers on the N64. Wandering around collecting jibbitty doops is so not my thing. It's a shame too because from a technical perspective those games were really top notch.

It's why I've never beaten JFG, I'm not saving all the ants.
