The 1.4 firmware now officially supports them.

About the tightness of the slots, for me the SNES slot started out tight (but not as tight as the Genesis slot), and over time it's easy to remove them now. I'm checking the pins every time I remove a game to make sure they're still straight.

Unless u live in an environment that is super dusty in which case u would likely be cleaning your carts on a constant basis the benefits would out weigh the negatives. I recommended the auto electric grease over other lubes since it is non corrosive to plastics. But hey to each his own.
Right, but my point was that electrical connections in the engine bay and such are generally staying plugged up. Say the wire to one of your headlights probably only gets unplugged once every few years. Any dirt or moisture that gets past a connector will likely be stopped by the edge of the layer of the electrical grease. So when you are infrequently replacing the headlight, you can wipe down and apply some new grease for the next 5 years.

On a cartridge slot you may be swapping carts several times per day. If you don't play a NES game for a week, are you always going to wipe down the slot flaps with a damp paper towel to collect any dust before pushing a cart in that scrapes that dust and flings it toward the slot? Yes it might be a tiny amount, especially if your environment is very clean, but you'll end up pushing more dust into the slot that will stick to the grease with that more frequent action that the once every five years or less for car connections.

Bought one, hating it, probably taking it back. It will not recognize a single cart. Though it did take the updates fine. What the hell????

Sounds like yours is defective. Haven't heard others having the same problem with not recognizing any game.

All I can do is watch YouTube reviews until mine comes in. The only carts I've seen that don't work are some homebrew, repros, unlicensed and carts with dirty pins. The following reviewer has done the most extensive testing on camera (as far as I've seen).

VGMX pre-orders, heads up.

Customer e-mail:

"We have recently been contacted by our Retron 5 supplier, Hyperkin, regarding our second shipment of Retron 5 systems. Unfortunately, the news is not good. Hyperkin has, for the third time, delayed this shipment of Retron5 systems. VGMX.com has decided we will be refunding the full amount of ALL unfulfilled Retron 5 orders. We are doing this because we are unsure when we will be supplied with the remainder of our pre-ordered systems. Hyperkin is not offering any additional information. Some of you have been waiting for the better part of a year and we greatly appreciate your patience. Thank you all for your business."

There were some waiting for them through VGMX.

So much cart blowing. :x

But otherwise useful. Seems he doesn't realize that the carts with the extra ports don't work because it dumps the cart and isn't talking to it when running.

That was helpful. I wish he wasn't using the sound enhancement thing on the Genesis games though, I wanted a better listen to those.

Interesting that Turrican didn't work. I wonder about other Accolade carts like Double Dragon.

I haven't had any problems with the Retron detecting carts. All I can say is make sure you have properly cleaned the contacts on your carts. You'd be surprised at how much filth is on there. I had one Q-Tip come back black after one swipe in the cart.
