I own Gradius III for SNES, and the one thing that I really appreciate about it is the near-surreal atmosphere it provides throughout.

The first (?) boss fight in particular -

Shooting through that gelatinous shield is easily one of the most unique experiences I've ever had playing a shmup.

Outstanding title, despite the lag.

Yeah that boss is 10x more annoying in the arcade version (stage 2).

Been playing Gokujou Parodius, what a fun game! I'm playing the PSX-J version. I did some cross-checking with mame, and noticed that the arcade version binds missle and bellpower to the same button. The PSX port lets you have different buttons.

I've been playing on semi-auto though, so I just hold down one button for shot/missle/bellpower. Anyone get how the powerup selection works with semi-auto? Sometimes it selects laser for me, other times it goes to option.

What character to people use in parodius? I know my version is different, but I like Octopus - the missiles that fall up are very handy, the expanding ripple laser is a favourite and the trailing options are MUCH better than the converging ones of characters like Pentarou. I think it's a bit different in other versions, so I'll explain -

If you move the vic viper or octopus characters with options, the options will follow their movement, but if you stop, they'll stop where you were just a second ago, so if you move up or down, you get a nice vertical line of shooting. Pentarou and twinbee however, when you stop, the options keep following until they're exactly where you are, meaning you don't get that nice spread unless you're constantly moving.
I've been trying all of them, but I like vic the most right now. Yeah the way the options move is nice. I'll try the octopus more. I don't use laser much, maybe should try that too.

That's the second boss fight.

I finished Gradius III (PS2/Arcade on very easy) a few days ago. I haven't gotten to Parodius III yet.
