Seriously you guys need to give the original Gundam movies or series a try, I don't kid with Japan treating it like their Star Wars (not to mention so many noticeable comparisons haha...) Wing and other installments shouldn't totally be seen as the be all representation of the Gundam franchise. It'd be like comparing FFXIII to VI or something, just two incredibly different things with entirely different people behind them, just with the name slapped on.

Sci-fi anime doesn't get better than Legend of the Galactic Heroes though. The second best thing next to it is probably Dougram, lots of politics there, and the series supposedly birthed the Battletech franchise. It was cool how that series actually has guerrilla tactics and realism, in that tanks/rocket launchers are formidable against mecha's. You pretty much never see that anywhere else.

I can't recommend Votoms enough as well, one of my top favorites by far. The war isn't at the forefront of the focus though, it's a bit more about the main character and his crazy journey throughout the world. But yeah, it comes from the same director behind Dougram, Ryosuke Takahashi. He is really the only mecha director in my mind that wasn't obviously pushing for toy sales, I think it's easier to just call his shows sci-fi since the mecha focus isn't always there. I love mecha all around, but a lot of times it gets obvious they just had to throw out pointless action episodes and new enemy units to sell toys. lol

In other epic news, Rightstuf licensed Rose of Versailles... holy crap, HOLY CRAP!!!

That is indeed epic. To have this and a Sailor Moon remake coming out next year....be still my heart.

If you don't want to wait for Rose of Versailles, than you could always give Le Chevalier D'Eon a shot. It's set right around the time of Louis XV. Lot's of intrigue, politics and pre-revolution in that one.

Pretty fun so far. I haven't seen the original so I can't really compare the original with this remake.

After oggling over images from the japanese Lain RESTORE blu rays, I just found out that they're getting released in the US in november, including an art book!

It's not a typical upscale job that you'd find in most anime BDs, it's an all new transfer from the original prints, with all the CG stuff completely re-rendered.

SciFi was actually airing the original Yamato series earlier this year until they cut anime out of their line-up entirely. It was too bad really. I was enjoying it up until they stopped. I just had to mute that horrible English opening. Yeesh :?

Yeah, I was tempted to get the japanese BDs, but they're out of print now and regularly go for over $300. That's a crazy amount of money for a single series.

I think this one is going to retail for $90ish or so, probably a lot cheaper depending on where you get it. It does come with a big art book apparently, though, so I think the price is probably worth it. I love the art for that series.

If it's the same one listed here on Amazon, then you'll be able to pick it up for $70 and Right Stuf is listing it for $53.99. Amazon doesn't mention anything about an artbook, but the ANN and Right Stuf sites do say that there will be a free gift with purchase, while supplies last, thought they don't stay what that is yet. Probably the book.



EDIT: Also, Hellsing Ultimate: Volumes 5-8 finally has a release date. YES! I've been waiting 3 years for this. They were even nice enough to release it and Lain on my birthday. I may have to buy myself a present :mrgreen:

Those computer screens look terrible in the 4th pic, lol (maybe an improvement over the original though? I still need to see Lain). Reminds me of Infinite Ryvius, had a lot of random digital scenes when most of the show was still cel drawn, the digital scenes stuck out horribly haha. I've even noticed this a bit in Bebop at times. Sunrise was experimenting a lot with it in the late 90's / early 2000's I guess. Here's a funny comparison with Bebop, episode 2, if you've got the eye for it:


@KillerJuan77: I can confirm that this Yamato remake... might be the greatest remake of all time. The script is like 90% straight from the original, everything about it seems incredibly faithful with a few more potential female characters and maybe some romances added in. I'm all about old anime and the original is something everyone should see, but I think this remake might even top it. The budget and music was really impressive too.

@Michi: Have you seen the Les Miserables anime? It's part of the World Masterpiece Theater series if you know about them (anime based off mostly European novels and stuff), that one was really awesome... the second half reminded me a lot of RoV more than anything else I've seen.

No I haven't. What little I can find of it right now looks pretty nice. I may have to try to track that one down. I'm a sucker for historical dramas.
