Sci-fi anime doesn't get better than Legend of the Galactic Heroes though. The second best thing next to it is probably Dougram, lots of politics there, and the series supposedly birthed the Battletech franchise. It was cool how that series actually has guerrilla tactics and realism, in that tanks/rocket launchers are formidable against mecha's. You pretty much never see that anywhere else.
I can't recommend Votoms enough as well, one of my top favorites by far. The war isn't at the forefront of the focus though, it's a bit more about the main character and his crazy journey throughout the world. But yeah, it comes from the same director behind Dougram, Ryosuke Takahashi. He is really the only mecha director in my mind that wasn't obviously pushing for toy sales, I think it's easier to just call his shows sci-fi since the mecha focus isn't always there. I love mecha all around, but a lot of times it gets obvious they just had to throw out pointless action episodes and new enemy units to sell toys. lol
