The sad thing is from a hardware perspective the Vita is a fine handheld. It's just that Sony keeps pushing devs to make console lite games instead of handheld games.

I much prefer pretty much everything about the Vita over the 3DS. Although the back touch screen wasn't really necessary. I don't have any games that make much use of it.

And up til now I really don't see how the Vita game selection is much, if at all, inferior to the 3DS lineup. Well, besides that more Vita games are ports from PS3 and PS2. But then again, most of the top rated 3DS games are N64 ports. Though I guess that's more acceptable to most people because they are beloved series and the originals are from 12-15 years ago.

There are more highly rated games on the 3DS than on the Vita, and many people will choose the system with more games on the shelf that they want.

That's only 14 games difference and the systems came out 11 months apart.

So, since February 2012 the Vita has had 31 games above 70% and since March 2011 the 3DS has had 45 games over 70%. Which system has a lack of quality titles?

It's not just the number, it's how wide an audience the games appeal to. There's a lot more on the 3DS to draw in female and younger gamers than on the Vita. I'm sure that's a factor as well.

Looking over the Vita list, I don't really see anything besides Plants vs Zombies that the average girl would have much interest in.

LittleBigPlanet..

But you are right. Sony is marketing the Vita for the "hardcore" crowd. Or was? don't see much of any marketing anymore. The 3DS has appeal to a much wider audience.

I would like to see the PS Vita do well. Sure, it will never do as well as the DS/3DS but it can still have a good following.

Looking at the recent media create thread at neogaf, I see this (these numbers are for Japan only):

It's disturbing to see that it sold 50% less than the PSP (look at this week sales). I think it will get better once they discount it some more and get more/better titles out there.

The rise of smartphones isn't something to be ignored as well (3DS sales pace are not the same as DS/DSi), as you have apps stores for iOS, Android, and Windows that offer quality games or ports (FFT, FFIII, GTA) for less than USD $20. While some Vita games are NOT worth their MSRP (Little Deviants...).

The harsh fact is Sony isn't marketing the Vita right: we have 2 bundles aimed for mature audience (both games that didn't received high reviews), 2 bundles aimed for younger audience w/o memory card - a serious crime!, and a 3G bundle with Unit 13 with 1 month of PS+, and a tiny 4GB memory card (please just give out the 8GB instead!).

The Vita has a much higher starting cost than the 3DS, a memory card is a must! And you would want to go with the highest capacity for the bang per buck, the 32GB which is set at USD $99.99 (I got mine at USD $77), especially if you are going to use the PS+ membership or download bunch of PSP games on PSN.

I did mention earlier Sony should've do a LBP Vita bundle: a Wi-fi only Vita (no need for AT&T 3G!) + LBP + a 16GB (just stop selling the tiny 4GB and 8GB!) + PSN voucher for Mutant Blob Attacks or Sound Shapes or Super Stardust Delta; all of this for USD $250, which I know Sony will lose money, but at least should move sales volume for the Vita. Either Sony takes a small loss right now or start clearing out all the Vita's they have one year from now.

I never understood why Sony had to use proprietary memory cards. I have a Sony Camcorder that I bought last year that uses SD cards.

The 3DS comes with a memory card (2GB for 3DS, 4GB for XL). It's small but it's there at least. It's also standard SD.
