Sorry agreed, love the ledge hanging. Nothing is more infuriating than missing a jump by a solitary pixel, the height of a toe nail, and falling to death when the obvious fingers could grab such a ledge.

If you guys want to talk awkward jumping... La-Mulana. I started this one up before AM2R and it seemed decent, but I suspect attempting to go back to it now will be disastrous. I'll probably just replay Zero Mission and take a break from Metroidvania since Metroid destroys all.

That's so true.

There was a guy on HG101's AM2R thread saying, "Stop whining there hasn't been any new 2D Metroids in 12 years, because there's tons of Metroid style games just with different graphics". And I just shook my head and didn't bother arguing. If someone can't tell the difference in quality between a real Metroid and a wannabe Metroid*, well that just says leagues about their powers of observation.

*And no, I'm not talking about AM2R in that instance.

Yeah, I'm extremely peculiar about any clones. Hated Cave Story, lol.

Axiom Verge looks awesome though so that's one I'm excited to hit up eventually.

And the other one I've been wondering about is Ghost Song:

Bloodstained will also be amazing I'm sure since it's got Iga. It's real Castlevania in everything but name! The 2D Castlevania's are still some of my top favorite games, so that just further emphasis how much I love Metroid since it's above those for me. I wish my pool of real Metroid games I could replay was Mega Man sized... but nope only a few options and all the imitators can't keep up. lol

Well, he's not entirely wrong. I've played some excellent Metroid-likes, or at least Metroidvania, so the school of gameplay isn't dead at all. And while there are bad ones, there are some excellent ones, too. But if you have to have Metroid in particular, then yeah, I suppose nothing else will work.

Besides, it's even cool to hate on Metroid Fusion now.

I've always hated/secretly loved Fusion though, right out of the gate and I don't think I was the only one. Not a huge fan of the art direction (especially Samus' new suit design), can't remember any of the music, the more mechanical the levels look the more boring to me for Metroid, the forced dark Samus stealth moments are not fun, the stronger forced narrative and linearity, and I don't find it very fun to backtrack in this one to try and go for 100%.

You clearly liked Other M more than me too though haha.

Fusion still rules. I just think the original, Super, and the Prime games outclass it big time, and I really did personally like AM2R more as well, which is crazy. I think I'd put Fusion a little above Other M, but I'm glad I played that one now too. Solid stuff.

I seem to be one of the only Prime 2 fans around here though. Only beat 2 and 3 once so I'm well due for a replay on those, but I loved them, and personally liked 2 more than 3 since it was way harder, complex, and longer. It's not entirely crazy to see where Other M was coming from after some of the goofier stuff Prime 3 did story wise.

I love drooling about Metroid.

It's cool to hate Metroid Fusion now? I've hated it since it was the new kid on the block because the made it so damned yappy, linear, and turned Samus into a paper wimp who could lose a 100HP in a hit or two depending on the enemy size which really ticked me off. I could deal with the linearity and chatty stuff, but the damage ratios are pure crap. That said I still have it, complete no less, and I intend to get around to it again at some point too so maybe I'll hate it less next time. Reverse of that, I've never hated Other M, I thought it was a great game that was a pure 2.5D style metroid that felt like the old but 3D too. I never really got offended or annoyed about her gear being limited until boss man said you could use it, really no different to me than finding it hiding on a map as it helped drive the story.

Prime 2 is excellent as well. I strangely had an easier time beating it than the original, too. Go figure!

But yeah, I pretty much think all the Metroid games are great. Metroid II or Other M are probably the "worst", but they're still really good. And I rarely revisit the original, although I probably should someday.

Those Dark Samus moments? They're not "fun", they're much more survival horror, where you're just running frantically for your life trying not to die. It does a great job of building atmosphere and tension. (Alternately described, it's "oh crap oh crap I'm gonna die".)

This is where I actually admit, however, that I wasn't stoked about Super Metroid before it released. Chalk that up to a combination of only liking, not loving, the first two games, and being an absolute RPG fiend without a Super Nintendo. Yeah, that'll do it.

And I can always depend on ya, Tanooki, for a blunt opposing view! :D

Now that this discussion has spun out into general Metroid talk, I'd like to say that Other M is underrated. Sure, the cut scenes were terrible, but the cut scenes in every video game are terrible. The gameplay of Metroid: Other M is fantastic.

I was excited about it too, excited enough to be a backer. If the game ever releases you'll see my name in the credits. I think Matt will finish it someday, but he's in no hurry whatsoever apparently.

Are there good metroidvanias? Sure. Do any of them match the quality of Zero or Super Metroid? Not that I've played. It's a bit like saying not to complain if there are no more Zeldas because there are Zelda-alikes that are just as good as the real thing. We both know that's not true. I feel the same way about Metroid-alikes. Not that I wouldn't be glad to be proven wrong. I'm totally open to suggestions for any metroidvanias* that are on the same level of quality as the best 2D Metroids.

I think Fusion is a great game. It's not as good as Zero sure, but it's better than OG Metroid II.
Xeogred wrote:I seem to be one of the only Prime 2 fans around here though.
I'd be a bigger fan of the game if it didn't have the stupid key hunts. Way too much time spent seeking out hidden keys. I didn't find that aspect fun at all. Prime 2 is however, absolutely the hardest and most complex of the trilogy, no doubt.

If you remove the terrible plot, and amp up the difficulty, then Other M would be a great game. As it stands it's still a good one. Definitely above average for Wii.

*Excluding the Castlevania games. I've beaten them all, and they are the closest in quality admittedly.
