Yeah, I hear everyone on WCW. I just wanted an excuse to go nuts on it, since I love it and never beat it. I'll strike it off for now. I'll be focusing on my top four, and then expect I'll pepper in some of the others as the fancy strikes me. Or are we actually supposed to have a definitive, ordered list of ten?

I just want to say that your listing your games alphabetically by system, then alphabetically by title, all while sorting numbers before letters and ignoring articles like "the," was beautiful.
Ack wrote:Don't feel bad about the Super Mario Bros. games. I didn't beat SMB3 for the first time until the Summer Challenge in 2013. I'm trying to psych myself up to finally play through The Lost Levels at this point.
Yeah, I feel the same way in that I have to "psych myself up" to play the early Mario games. I don't get excited about them. I have a lot of residual childhood feelings towards them that are hard to shake! Like laurenhiya21, I didn't start having real fun with Mario titles until Mario 64. If Wario Land doesn't count, that is.

It's the only game that has ever beaten me.
You must not shmup much.
I don't. I am more of a platformer fan, and I have never completed a shmup with a single credit. That said, I have seen the endings in:
Abadox
Axelay
Blazing Lazers
Darius Twin
Darius Gaiden
G-Darius
Gradius
Gradius III
Life Force
R-Type
R-Tpe II/Super R-Type
R-Type III
R-Type Final
S.C.A.T.
Space Megaforce
Stinger
Thunder Force III
U.N. Squadron
Zanac
I feel like R-Type Delta (along with Einhander, The Guardian Legend, RayForce, and Zaxxon) is one of the few "classic" shmups I have not seen to the end, and if you have any tips on beating it, I would love to hear them!

Thank you! (Also, if you are talking about WCW vs. The World, then I would consider it a classic. It is the first AKI Corporation Wrestling game released outside of Japan, and in addition to serving as the basis for several extremely well-received sequels and spin-offs, it provided the template for all modern wrestling games.)

I love that a lot of the policing of "classic" or "not" is being done by people other than me thus far. I feel like a proud papa or something.

I feel like Dsheinem was going more for 'if you shmupped more you'd have found a lot more games which would beat you' rather than 'if you shmupped more you'd beat this without too many issues'. I could be totally wrong on that though.

I think that both interpreations of the statement - and that the statement itself - are probably correct.

Most of us list ten, but I prefer to list 5 definites with 5 alternates to switch out as needed and possibly attempt after I get through the first five. Last year I ended up beating only 1 on my list, but it burned me out so bad that I dropped the whole thing. That's what I get for starting with Daikatana. The year before I beat 5/10 but burned out over Prince of Persia. 2012, I got 2/10(though I went back and beat several others later). 2011, I didn't participate. Considering how often I tend to get bored or tired of these lists and move on to something else, I figured a 5 on/5 off system would work better for me.

And the only Mario game that really excites me these days from the original run is SMB2, because it's so weird and because it introduced Shy Guys, my favorite Mario enemy. Since Lost Levels is considered so tough, I always figured it would come last. But at this point it's the only game left to beat on my Mario All-Stars cartridges, so I should get it done...

It's only because the jokes I used to make about you being such a harsh taskmaster got old.

Actually I didn't play Mario 64 until after I beat Sunshine and Galaxy haha. I've never played on a N64, so I didn't have a chance to try it until I got a Wii.
Ack wrote: Golden Axe III was also only available via the Sega Channel in the US during its initial release, making it an early example of online-exclusive console gaming.
I didn't know that actually D: That's actually kinda cool...
Ack wrote: That said, it's considered a mediocre game. I can also see an argument for leaving Dino Crisis on, since it did phenomenally well and is considered one of the best selling games Capcom ever put out. I just think it's second tier after the RE series and Silent Hill on the PS1.
Ok, I see your point. I've reordered my list a bit... Now I have it in approximately the order I want to play in, but I might go out of order if carts don't work or something. I would prefer to not buy more than Mario Bros 2 on the VC, which is why Gunstar Heroes is fairly low on the list. I might bump it up the list if I fix my computer way before I get to it.

1. Super Mario World (SuFami)
2. Yoshi’s Island (SuFami)
3. Klonoa: Door to Phantomille (PSN)
4. Contra III (SuFami)
5. Super Mario Bros 2 (Wii VC?/Emu)

6. Silent Hill (PS1)
7. Golden Axe III (PS3?/Wii VC?/Steam)
8. Mega Man X (SuFami)
9. Super Punch-Out!! (Wii VC)
10. Gunstar Heroes (Wii VC?/Steam)
11. Dino Crisis (PSN)
12. Final Fight 2 (SuFami)

@prfsnl_gmr

Have you beaten the original R-Type?

I have that on my list.

Also, your "To Beat" list is awesome.

And seriously dude. Gorf?! You can loop it in under three minutes. Actually, the first time I ever fired up a copy - "just to test it" - I ended up rolling through like three loops.

I have! I played through it and R-Type II nearly a decade ago on the PS1 R-Types collection. (I have also beaten the surprisingly awesome GB and GBC R-Type games, but I am not sure that those count.) R-Type is probably my favorite shmup series, and that is whay I am so vexxed that I cannot beat R-Type Delta. It is also a series that you cannot push through with credit-feeding since death sends you back to the beginning of the level.

Also, how did you play Gorf? I want to play something close to the arcade original - sorry Atari 2600 port! - but I do not think it is available anywhere. (I wil probably end up downloading MAME just to play it.)

I agree, however, that there are also a lot of games on my list that shouldn't take that long. I just need to find the motivation to play them, and the summer gaming challenge is great for that.

Ah. I see. I have three Gorf ports. Commodore 64, VIC-20, and Atari 2600. I listed in them order of quality.
