I have a stance on the name and wanted to speak about it. I didn't know much about the Irish persecution, so I asked. If you guys were to do deeper into this I wouldn't try to interject. Up until I commented about the Irish I'd like to think I knew what I was talking about. Correct me If I'm wrong.

To kind of get back on track, how about Team Mascots? This could maybe be to any group that might find it offensive, where to draw the line?

The San Diego Aztecs Mascot "Monty" years ago was represented by a warrior figure injecting battle crys to win a game. To appease I guess correct history it became a passive Montezuma sitting on the sidelines in; sorry but looks to me like a drag queen outfit. Thankfully, that only lasted a year, the warrior came back for a few more years.

Currently we have a Puma representing the Aztec name!

SAN DIEGO — After a seven-month controversy, the president of San Diego State announced Tuesday that campus mascot Monty Montezuma will be renamed and given a new regalia and demeanor "more fitting [for] his position as emperor."

Under the ruling by President Stephen Weber, the person playing Montezuma will no longer run along the sidelines at football games carrying a flaming spear and exhorting fans to cheer. Gone too is the name Monty the mascot.

Instead, Montezuma the San Diego State ambassador will sit regally and observe the team, which will retain the name Aztecs.

Weber's decision comes amid demands by some Native American students to stop using a depiction of the 16th century Aztec ruler, and counter-demands by other students and graduates to preserve the status quo.

I'm sorry, why was that first mascot found offensive?

Plus you have college teams practicing sacred tribal dances from across the globe...and those players have no ties to the origin of the dance.

That said, I could care less if it is a white girl in a coconut bra shakes it like a polaroid picture; I'm all for it.

You also have Sonic games on Nintendo consoles.... Not the same, but I had to throw that out there.

Kind of similar:
I remember when people were getting all offened about Mark Sanchex having a Mexican flag themed mouthpiece.

Nothing that constitutes a social identity should be used as a sporting name or logo. There are plenty of other things that can be used as logos and names that are much more credible and much less oppressive. Get rid of the Tribe, Indians, Redskins, Fighting Sioux, and use more socially just team names and logos.

Like West Bromwich Albion F.C. -- The Baggies / Throstles.

Why? Why is it offensive to just even MENTION a minority?

It's not "mentioning" a minority, it's depicting a minority in the name of having a corporate mascot.
