Violent By Design wrote:I dont get how a retro gamer can hate the current gen, but love the PS2 era. People do realize that there is actually a retro Renaissance in today's modern video game community both on an indie level and mainstream one, as opposed to the 5th and 6th gens where 2D was almost entirely neglected or overlooked as insignificant.

If anything it is a sheep mentality not to dig with an open mind, and to just go with the easy opinion of "today's stuff sucks".

I am personally starting to see the 'age' in games that are supposed to be ageless in the 16 bit era, and it's largely due to 2D games that are being released now. That's something the 5th gen and 6th gen never did since not enough developers cared to venture into the 2D genres.

This is an excellent point. There is a huge retro embrace that has been held by the indie world and at times, even the mainstream developers. The most recent Megaman games embraced the NES generation with full force as a great example.

Ever since Braid, the indie world has flourished and pushed what a small group of people can do. Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy, Fez... these games take a classical approach to games and add modern conventions to them to add depth.

Even crazier is the idea that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all in a mad dash to snag up those indie games and have them released on their system first, showing just how much power that industry has now.

I understand the frustration of GirlGamer. I want innovation and change. I know that my opinion differs because I find that innovation and change in Nintendo's systems. Yes, the motion controls on the Wii were not perfect, but I had a lot of fun with my friends and family with that system.

With the WiiU it is the exact same. When we have friends over, we bust out the WiiU and the look on their faces are pure joy. They have honest to goodness fun. We play games to socialize with others most of the time and the WiiU gives us that opportunity. That is why I am waiting on the rest of this generation.

I feel like a broken record always saying it, but I want to wait on the PS4. I feel like the exclusives they will have will be games that I want, but I need to wait and see. I am not willing to pay the amount of money they are charging, so I am going to wait it out.

Modern gaming sucks. It's all too flashy and new. I'll love it when it turns retro.

And now back in the real world, gaming rules whether it's retro or current. There's something out there for everyone. If you think modern games systems suck, you aren't looking hard enough. Edit: Or more likely, you're too cheap to pay for it so just pretend it sucks.

A lot of the comments do sound a lot like "I didn't pay attention, but I don't like Company X, therefore ..." sort of arguments :\

Ooh, we've got a rebel here. She's not like us white-collared office drones who love our modern Call of Duties and Halos. No, no, she's a free spirit. She has her own opinions and doesn't follow anyone. Not like all them modern gamers out there.

I'm 99% sure that you're a teenager or in your very early 20's. In a few years you'll realize how foolish you sound and stop worrying about what other people think.

I always find myself surprised at how hard people get slammed here - on a retro gaming site - for speaking out about not liking modern gaming.

Speaking out about not liking modern gaming is as bad/the same as speaking out against retro gaming. Games can be great regardless of the generation it comes from. It's just such an ignorant sweeping comment to make.

Liking retro games doesn't mean that you need to dislike modern games though.

I don't think it was not liking modern gaming so much as the tone and choice of words.

And when did liking retro gaming = not liking modern gaming?

I see it less about stating a preference, and more about how those who don't share it tend to get classified.

...aside from how often the statements about modern (or any other generation) of games are easily countered, and how that can turn into a conversation in and of itself.
