Actually it's not. You're implying that Halo is bad without question.blackmagepwns wrote:Halo - Enough said.

Hey, people can dislike whatever they want. Although if they can't provide any real objective criticism, they're just jumping on the hate bandwagon. That makes them a sheep too, just in a different herd.MrPopo wrote:Which it is.Flak Beard wrote:Actually it's not. Named Mr. Popo, I'm assuming you have some sort of affinity towards DBZ? How does it make you feel when people just bash DBZ without any real claims to why they think the series sucks? DBZ is a lot like Halo in a sense. It's a anime snobs initial punching bag. Most of these people probably have never even watched more than an episode of it. They just "heard" it was uncool to like it, and so they do. Sounds a bit like Halo, no?
But like I said though, you can dislike whatever you want. Just at least show some evidence you know what the fuck you're talking about before trashing it.

Re: Games You Hate That Everyone Else Loves
Actually, I'll join people in on bashing DBZ. It was my first anime, but looking back I can see just how bad the pacing is. I found myself fascinated by the Mr. Popo character, though, and decided that based upon his mannerisms he HAD to be the most powerful character on that show. I've watched the eps from the start of DBZ through large portions of Cell Saga (never got to the Cell games before I just gave up on it) and feel very comfortable saying that it's a pretty bad anime (though I've seen far worse).Flak Beard wrote:Hey, people can dislike whatever they want. I suppose it's a little unfair to call Halo bad. I would call it "average". Possibly even "competent". But it doesn't do anything that hadn't already been done and done better on the PC. It's even a step back control-wise. The biggest issue I have with it is that it caused a massive boom in FPS's on the console platforms and subsequently caused several FPS's to suffer in quality to varying degress (DX:IW, Bioshock).

Re: Games You Hate That Everyone Else Loves
Isn't that a little ridiculous to say that Halo somehow ruined these two games indirectly just because it made console FPS games become popular? DX:IW and Bioshock are both made by competent developers who could of made great ports for both platforms. Halo had absolutely nothing to do with this.MrPopo wrote:I suppose it's a little unfair to call Halo bad. I would call it "average". Possibly even "competent". This sounds like some PC elitist bullshit way of thinking. If consoles couldn't provide a solid FPS experience, then we wouldn't have saw the boom. Halo showed it could be done on a console, and done well. Developers just followed suit.
Re: Games You Hate That Everyone Else Loves
That's exactly what I'm arguing. Most of these console shooters are NOT a solid FPS experience. I personally felt that DX:IW was a horrible letdown and was clearly the victim of consolization. Bioshock I thought was good, but then when you play System Shock 2 you quickly can see the things they cut out to make the game accessable.Flak Beard wrote:Isn't that a little ridiculous to say that Halo somehow ruined these two games indirectly just because it made console FPS games become popular? Let's go back to the DBZ example. There are a lot of fans of DBZ who have never seen any other anime, so in their limited context it's great. And when you compare it to most American cartoons it is really good. But then when you compare it to titles such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Bakemonogatari you realize that DBZ is on the low end of the spectrum.
Similarly, most of the fans of console shooters do not play PC shooters. This is due to a variety of reasons, but the mostly commonly cited one is the lack of desire to spend the money on a gaming quality PC. For many, many years the PC shooters were the tech demos of the industry, so now in many people's minds you need to spend $2000 on a computer to be able to play FPS's. So instead of spending that much money they instead just grab Halo or Killzone. They simply do not know what they are missing.
And I wanted to address your rebuttal to my DX:IW and Bioshock point. I was not actually complaining about the quality of the port job. Bioshock was a very good port job. Halo was a terrible port job. DX:IW had a mediocre port job (it felt unoptimized). The issue is that in order to better suit their games for the console platform they made design decisions that fundamentally dumbed down the experience. In DX:IW they removed the skill system, added universal ammo, removed location specific damage (lol headshots), and changed the inventory system from a Diablo-style grid to a hard limit of N slots, with all items taking up equal space (the other changes could be aruged as streamlining that might have occured if it was PC only). In Bioshock the changes were far more minor compared to System Shock 2. The one that really sticks out is they replaced a skill system where you have full control of your character build with the tonic system. Now, I don't have a huge issue with that, but it does change how your character evolves. With a skill system you have the freedom to go as hardcore or as jack-of-all-trades as you want no matter what specific point of the game you are in. With the tonic system you're more dependent on whether the devs feel it's ok for you to have Hacking level 2 at some stage in the game. It limits your ability to do interesting character builds from the get-go.

Re: Games You Hate That Everyone Else Loves
Well, even if you like DBZ, it's faults are so commonly named that if someone just says "DBZ Sucks", you don't really need a list of reasons. We all know it drags on needlessly forever, the show started going downhill in a big way after the Cell Saga, and that the show often focused on things that no one wants to see (you find me someone who actually wants to see an entire episode dedicated to Goku as a frog, and I'll take that statement back).Flak Beard wrote: Hey, people can dislike whatever they want. If people say that "Halo Sucks", I generally assume that they're the type to hate the game for being more about multi-player than single-player, and to have a multi-player mode that isn't even as good as other games' multi-player modes. I also assume that most Halo Haters grew up playing PC FPSs, and were disgusted with how Halo simplified everything. It might have been great for those new to FPSs, but those with experience probably saw it as huge step-backwards - and worse yet, every other company wanted to follow Bungie. So, to them, Halo is the reason FPSs in general have taken a huge step-backwards.
Edit: Didn't see all the other posts when I posted - anyway, yeah, this ain't PC Elitist bullshit. You play Deus Ex from start to finish, and then play Deus Ex: Invisible War. That experience was soul-crushing to me. One of my favorite PC experiences of all time was reduced to "See? We can be like Halo too!"
Re: Games You Hate That Everyone Else Loves
I would also throw in the recent Shadowrun FPS title that was brutalized to allow console players a chance in multiplayer matches against PC owners.
I've played consoles all my life, and PC games for most of it. I've been playing FPS titles since DOOM. While we did see a precursor to this in the days of the Nintendo 64 with the success in Goldeneye(I don't mean to say Halo's on the same level as Goldeneye to me, because...well, it's not in my opinion, but it has had a major impact on the market), the PC FPS genre wasn't hit as hard at the time because it, too, was seeing a revolution in Half-Life. So generally the fact that Turok 2's PC port was a frigging mess isn't remembered. And while I did enjoy playing them, I realize that the FPS ports from PC to console at the time, titles like Duke Nukem 64 and Hexen, weren't nearly as good as their PC counterparts.
And even in the same generation, games that came before Halo that started on the console just didn't feel right on the PC. Take the first Red Faction. On the PS2, the AI's not very good, but my scroll speed is set up for it. For the PC version...no, it's just didn't feel acceptable to me. The AI in Unreal Tournament was better, and that game had come out two years previous.
And now I see console FPS titles like Resistance: Fall of Man, and while it's apparently a good game, I can't stand it because it just doesn't feel good to play it to me. The controls feel terrible, the AI's poor, and the interaction between the two(ie. when I shoot them) doesn't feel smooth at all. And unfortunately, the PC realm really hasn't had a revolutionary FPS in a while, at least nothing that hasn't also been planned for a console release almost from the getgo. I believe this is why some feel the console market is killing the PC market, and why they've become so defensive about it.
As for Halo, having beaten the first two, since there's a desire in this thread that we only speak with certainty having experienced the title first hand, I can say that I do not care for them. I did not like the controls in either of the first two titles, and the storyline did not impress me. While I think certain specific levels were ok, for the most part they came across as repetitive and mindless. At first I thought the AI was interesting, until I realized that it really just does the same thing in every fight, regardless of the setting, which is usually open enough for me to easily avoid any enemy tactics in the first place. Allied AI is far worse, character design is often stereotypical, and I dislike what Halo seems to have done for the health system of every FPS in existence now.
That's not to say I don't find a few highpoints. I thought some of the weapon designs were interesting, such as the needler or plasma pistol. Beyond that though, most weapons were the same thing I've seen in almost every other FPS(which is fine, as the shotgun is always the Old Standby for me). And at the time, the games were relatively pretty and certainly don't look terrible today, if you happen to like bloom lighting.
I also dislike most of what I've seen of the online community, but then again, I often despise large segments of any online community in a game, because they tend to sound and act like 12 year olds.
