That is the only other SRPG I have ever played. If I recall correctly, I got about 3/4 of the way through it as a teenager; so, I may have to reassess my experience with this genre. (I rented it 3-4 times in a row, and I did not own a copy of the game until I was an adult.) I agree that its progression system is opaque, to say the least, but I may nonetheless revisit it someday.

Ogre Battle is on my list. I never went very far in it, but my brother beat it. I went further into Ogre Battle 64, and it's pretty good, too. I wish I had the SNES cart, but I never could find it. I do have the PSX version, though, which works well enough.

The original Ogre Battle is a game that one should definitely read the manual before playing. I did not do that, and I felt lost while I was playing it. I only put about two hours into it before getting disillusioned and moving on. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it might be a really fun game if you understand it. But it's damn sure not an intuitive experience.

I've played quite a few SRPGs (and there's many more I want to play). If you're interested in my recommendations for the genre:
Image
Front Mission - Build a squad of wanzers (mechs) and destroy enemy squads of wanzers while surviving global government power struggles. I've finished FM1 on DS, FM3 on PS1, and FM4 on PS2. All were excellent and a fabulous time. As far as strategy goes, these games are never too hard or too easy, falling squarely in the middle. You always have to try to win, but never will you feel like you have no hope. Front Mission on DS was my favorite of the three I've beaten.

Image
Valkyria Chronicles II - Help a group of young military school cadets fend off an invading army while dealing with racism issues. I beat this on PSP, and loved it. People tell me it's not as good as the first game, and that must mean the first game is unbelievably good, because this game was a blast. (I plan to play the first and third game within the next two years.) This was another SRPG where the difficulty was always right in the middle. I enjoyed the gameplay so much I beat every single optional mission (there's a lot of those).

Image
Final Fantasy Tactics - I'm not even going to try to encapsulate the story in one sentence here, it's too complex. I didn't play this game until a year or so ago, and I expected to be disappointed after seeing it hyped up for so long. Turns out my fears were unfounded, and I LOVED this game. Granted, I played the PSP translation injected into the PS1 game (best localization / no slow down). This game is crazy crazy fun and is addicting as hell. It's not too difficult, but there's a massive difficulty spike in the middle of the game... and then strangely the difficulty regresses from there back to being easy again. Fantastic experience not to be missed.

Image
Fallout Tactics - This one is terribly underrated. I think people have problems with it because it will kick your ass and not care. Yes, this game is quite hard, but in a fair way. What people don't know is this game has a lot of RPG to go with that SRPG tag. There are sidequests within missions, hidden missions, your player characters are highly configurable and level up in complex ways. There's moral choices to make, all that good stuff. I loved this one years ago, and I was absolutely addicted to it to the point of finishing its 65 hour campaign in one week. If you love Fallout, and you love tactical strategy, you will love this game. People used to complain about the computer AI turns taking too long, but with modern processors I doubt that's an issue anymore.

Image
Faselei! - A war story where you play as soldiers in an elite mech division. Yes this is another mech SRPG, although it's not much SRPG---more tactical turn based squad really. It does not play like Front Mission though. Man this game is tremendously fun. You set up your own mechs in your squad by preprogramming them before each move. Because you have to preprogram your moves in advance for quite a few steps, you must do an excellent job of planning ahead. As in, you don't just plan one move ahead, you need to plan three or even five moves ahead. It's easy to learn, and not too hard to master. This game can be challenging, but once you get some nice chips for your programming setup (and rocket fist punches) it's not too hard. Such a hidden gem this game is though! Definitely my favorite Neo Geo Pocket title.
One day I've got to get around to playing Tactics Ogre on PSP. People say it's the god tier SRPG to end all SRPGs. That and the grand edition of Brigandine are what I'm most interested in playing next in this genre.

Shining Force III has the best voiceover work ever in a game.

Tactics Ogre is way harder than Ogre Battle, in my opinion.

They're such different games that it's like saying StarCraft is harder than Super Mario Bros.

I support Exhuminator's selections, though I have a couple tweaks to make. Faselei's English release is perhaps the most expensive NGPC game there is, so you might hold off if cost is an issue. And I recommend starting with Final Fantasy Tactics, which was my introduction to the genre. The original US release has...problems, but it's totally worth playing.

After that...play Front Mission! I have played through it and most of one side of FM3 but never finished it. I have FM4 but have yet to give it a spin. But this series is an absolute blast.

As for Tactics Ogre, since he mentioned the PSP, I believe he means Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together. I haven't played it, but I have beaten the prequel, Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis. It was quite good, though there was slightly less versatility in your order of actions when compared to FFT. If you find that FFT's gameplay really appealed to you, look into the TO games.

There are many, many other SRPGs out there if you end up liking the genre: Bahamut Lagoon, the Fire Emblem series, Saiyuki: Journey West, La Pucelle Tactics, the Langrisser series, Vandal Hearts, Sakura Wars, Rebelstar, so on and so forth.

And then there is Disgaea...of which we should never speak.

True. But they are both in the same series.
Ack wrote:Saiyuki: Journey West
I thought you were trolling until I realized that there are more "Saiyuki" SRPGs beyond the Famicom game.

I think those should be avoided, yeah...

Also, professional,
1) get a Retron 5
2) get Der Langrisser, Bahamut Lagoon, and Front Mission

Thanks for the suggestions, team!

Final Fantasy Tactics has been on my "to beat" list forever; so, it will probably be my next SRPG. (Unless somebody talks me out of it, I will probably play through the PSP remake, War of the Lions.) After that, I may have to splurge on a copy of Shining Force III (and I am very tempted to go back and play Shining Force, just so I can say that I have beaten the original games in the series).

I know...I know...I'll get one. (I will probably ask my children (i.e., my wife) for one for Father's Day.)

Indeed I mean the PSP port-remake. Not the SFC or PS1 versions.

Aww come on man, don't be like that d00d.

Not talking you out of it, but the PSP version has some slow down issues with the larger magic spells. Some people say it breaks the game for them. Also the PSP version uses sprite rescaling that makes the sprites blurry. But the PSP version has the best localization, so that's why I used a patch to make the PS1 version have its localization, and just played it on ePSXe.

BTW Shining Force 3 USA and European version is only 1/3rd of the game. There's an English fan hack out there that lets you play the other 2/3rds of the game with an emulator or modded Saturn though.
