Took the wife to see The Avengers last night. She was disappointed that Cap nor Thor didn't walk around half naked the whole time (spoiler alert?) but still managed to enjoy the movie.

Never one to miss an opportunity to embarrass me, at a certain point in the movie she loudly asks, "Oh I know him! You have his action figure don't you?".

I do.

Avengers.

Good.

Some spoilers. . . mmk

I had a few issues. Most which were probably due to the issues of dealing with so many characters, but issues nonetheless.

Thor's return to earth was just sort of glossed over. At the end of Thor they were all running around doing fancy math/sciency stuff to figure out how to get him back. I'm pretty sure had they gone straight to Thor 2, they would have followed up with that and getting Thor back might've been the buildup at the beginning of the movie. As it was it basically just got sorted in one line "used lots of black magic". Ah. . . ok.

Then there was the issue of Bruce being able to control the hulk. And his quick transformation. He just says "that's my secret, I'm always angry" which only made slight sense to me. I know Loki was supposedly manipulating him towards the beginning, but it seemed like he was only manipulating him to become the hulk, not actually controlling him once he transformed. I know they mentioned the controlling the hulk thing in the previous movie, but it still felt kind of unexplained.

I also felt that they pushed a little too hard to get the plot to conform to the "team has issues with eachother, but they get past them to work together and save earth" storyline. Tony in particular seemed overly assholish to Captain America from the beginning.

I'm still pretty surprised the route they went with the story though. It was founded so much on Thor and some of Captain America, which seemed risky considering the Iron Man series served as the foundation for all this. I kept thinking people who were only there for a 3rd iron man outing might be a little lost.

Thor: I don't think it was to crazy him showing up. Loki used the portal opened by SHIELD and the Tesseract. They sensed this in Asgard and sent Thor to retrieve Loki, by spending dark energy. It seemed clear to me that when Thor went back to Asgard in the THOR movie, he wasn't looking to return.

Hulk: I'm with you here a little, I didn't quite understand the Loki-Hulk connection. Or why he couldn't control it on the ship, but could later.

Iron Man:I think that Tony Stark was mostly being an a-hole to Capt. America because of his ties with his dad. Because he got to spend time with him and his dad ignored him. Just my thought.

The Hulk thing, I look at it this way: His first transformation in the film was abrupt. He was already on edge, having argued with the rest of the cast. Then the explosion set him off. That's just it. It set_him_off. He couldn't control Hulk's emergence there. But we know (because of the ending of Incredible Hulk) that Bruce was able to manifest a bit of control in transforming. So when he CHOSE to transform later in the film, it was under his terms, and he was more in control. At least that's how I took it.

The ending of the incredible hulk definitely suggested at that, and I think it's another situation where if they had done a sequel to that first, they would have fleshed that concept out. But since time was limited, they just played it fast and loose.

Last night i watched The Great Silence, an old spaghetti western from 1968. Overall, it was a good story with a solid ending way ahead of its time. However, most of the rest of the film was definitely dated by today's standards. Overall, I'd give it a grade of B-.

One of my favorite non-Leone spaghetti westerns. Having the film take place in the snowy mountains compared to the normal desert setting makes it stand out from the other spaghetti westerns. Klaus Kinski as the antagonist is always great to see and Jean-Louis Trintignant plays the mute role really well but I wouldn't think that would be difficult. Also, Ennio Morricone's score is just great to the ears (The Great Silence - Restless). The ending though is what really makes it great.

The Hudsucker Proxy
I enjoyed this movie, but it doesn't really feel like a Coen Bros. film. It could have been made by any competent family-friendly comedy director. Still good, but it lacked the particular style I expected.
