Actually, II and V are pretty even for me. Yes, I went there.

I am playing Shining Force II right now. I am enjoying it, but it is a bit easy. (TO its credit, I am playing it on "normal" difficulty.) Moreover, I have no idea how it compares to the other games in the Shining series...
In short, my question is, does it suck?
Re: Summer Games Challenge 2015
There are a lot of things I like about Mystic Quest, but there are a lot of things that just feel so rudimentary about it to me that I couldn't say I hold it up over any of the other FF games on the SNES. But I'll wait to make that comparison until after I've beaten FFV, so I can judge all four of the Super Famicom/SNES Final Fantasies from the perspective of someone who has beaten them.
I will say this though: Mystic Quest had one major failing above anything else it could be criticized for that I recall, and that is that status effects are devastatingly punishing to the player and almost inconsequential to the enemies. Most JRPGs have that problem, but not to the extent of MQ due to its extremely limited party size(and in a few cases I recall enemies using status effects when you have only one character, meaning your chance for survival was occasionally a crap shoot).

It's way better than the latest ones.prfsnl_gmr wrote:In short, my question is, does it suck?

If Mystic Quest had come out before FFIV it would have been remembered fondly today by everyone.
By "latest ones" I assume you mean anything that has the word "Shining" in it that was after Shining Force III.Ack wrote:It's way better than the latest ones.prfsnl_gmr wrote:In short, my question is, does it suck?

I like it. Dunno if I "really" like it. The remakes are solid. A remake of II is better than any version of V. But the original versions of II and V are about even. Hope this clarifies everything.prfsnl_gmr wrote: I thought you really liked FFII...
As for Shining Force II, it rules. That's my favorite installment. I'm actually surprised you find it "easy" - perhaps you are a natural.
And there doesn't seem to be any compelling reason to play any "Shining Force" game beyond part III.
May is hot.

It does, actually. I thought you were referring to all versions of the game. I have only played the remake and can't stomach the original.BoneSnapDeez wrote:I like it. Dunno if I "really" like it. I have not come close to being wiped out yet, and my force is basically invincible. The worst thing that has happened to me is that an under-powered character gets killed before I can level him or her up. In those instances, I just egress and start the battle over.BoneSnapDeez wrote:As for Shining Force II, it rules. That's my favorite installment. Thoughts on the summer challenge...
If you don't play the games on your challenge list, you don't get any closer to completing the summer challenge.

Welcome to the dilemma!
The game I have been playing while ignoring my own challenge list was amazing, so I feel the tradeoff was worth it.

I don't know about Shining Force II, but I found the original Shining Force to be ridiculously easy, like babby's first strategy game easy. It was a good game overall, not saying it isn't, but it was far from challenging.prfsnl_gmr wrote:In short, my question is, does it suck?
As for the Summer Games Challenge, once I finish Vanquish, I plan to devote myself to finishing the rest of the games in my list, starting with King's Field (that'd be KFII in Japan).
PLAY KING'S FIELD.
