Should The Redskins change their name and Logo?

^ The suicide rate within the Native American community, especially teens, seems to be awfully high.

Not that I'm aware of. The University is still selling Fighting Sioux merch.
Moron,
You live up to your name. No, you don't use the n word in front of black "friends", and...I'll just stop there.

How long did you wait to crack that gem open?

I suggest looking into the Philadelphia Nativist Riots, the Know Nothing Movement, the riots of the 1830s against Irish construction teams, the Ursuline Convent Riots, Bloody Monday, the debate over NINA, the Know Nothing Riot of 1856. Also, the anti-Catholic riots in Maine between 1830-1855. You might consider looking into the New York City draft riots.oxymoron wrote:Compared to the Natives who had most of their land stolen from them, were beat and killed, lied to and forced onto reservations, I think it's safe to say they had it a just a little bit harder. Whole political parties were developed to eliminate the Irish influence. Hell, a large part of New England politics in the 1800s was about keeping the Irish down.
And it should be noted, the occupation and subjugation of the Irish can be traced back as far as the Norman Invasion of Ireland in 1169(or possibly further, as Germanic invasions may have been occurring within the region as early as the 8th century, though the Norman Invasion is the start of anti-Irish sentiment in England). And anti-Irish sentiment still persists in the United Kingdom and in recent decades has grown in places like Australia, where the NINA sign has returned to regular use by Australian businesses.
But let's take a moment to consider that really, it doesn't matter who necessarily "has it harder." Both groups have had to deal with terrible racism, violence, and subjugation. But both are a respectable and proud peoples that deserve equal and fair treatment, be it in most modern affairs or even in insultingly comical representation as athletic mascots.

I'm not going to lie, idk jack about that stuff. My answer to the original question of why the Irish aren't offended as much is that the Natives are more offended because they are still feeling the effects of they're persecution. By that I mean they didn't get their land back and still live on little reservations. I think we can agree that for the most part that the Irish aren't target for racism anymore. Which i'm guessing was what mostly constituted of their persecution.Ack wrote:I suggest looking into the Philadelphia Nativist Riots, the Know Nothing Movement, the riots of the 1830s against Irish construction teams, the Ursuline Convent Riots, Bloody Monday, the debate over NINA, the Know Nothing Riot of 1856. Orange is the color associated with the loyalist movement in Ireland. Orangemen are people who wanted to stay under the control of the British crown, in opposition to the Irish nationalists who wanted an independent state.oxymoron wrote:Would you please fill me in as to why?Luke wrote:^To this day wearing an orange shirt in certain parts of "Catholic Chicago" can land you a severe beating.

This was more to my point oxymoron. Besides the obvious nfl/mlb mixup, you keep interjecting on a thread where your knowledge on the matter is severely lacking.

Admittedly though, it was a good way to learn. And I agree with him, now that he has hashed out his point a bit. Yes, the Native American population is still reeling from the effects of American expansion from the days of Manifest Destiny. The least we can do is offer some dignity by not parading them around for athletic performances.Jmustang1968 wrote:This was more to my point oxymoron.
