it's kind of lousy to openly admit that you plan to pirate from indie devs. Now who doesn't value whose time and money?Weekend_Warrior wrote:or just wait for the game files to show up on the net and then burn it.

There's nothing like having an original hardcopy of a game.Weekend_Warrior wrote:Nobody is upset about it. I think this is great news for Dreamcast and shmup fans. I just don't agree with it being a Dreamcast exclusive that costs $46. Maybe if this were five years ago then I would understand, but today games like this cost $5 or less on XBLA, and redspotgames currently does have a game on XBLA - Solar Struggle. So I'm thinking this is just a way for them to try to cash in on that small thriving DC community that will essentially buy ANYTHING as long as it says Dreamcast on the spine. I mean, c'mon.. admit it, Dux was complete garbage. You know it and I know it. Nobody is gonna tell me that game was worth more than $5. But people bought into it simply because it was a new Dreamcast game and there was probably going to be only so many copies made (or so they were led to believe), so it became an instant collectible at that point.d123456 wrote:Great news and yet some people are upset!![]()

just kidding
While I commend someone wanting to support the Dreamcast nearly ten years after its demise, I just feel that the emperor has no clothes. For $10, I can download Ikaruga in HD and play one of the greatest shooters ever made. But these guys want $46 for a cheap R-Type/Darius clone in 2011? Dreamcast or not... I think I'll pass, or just wait for the game files to show up on the net and then burn it.
Even if they released a Dreamcast game under emulation like the recent Crazy Taxi on 360 it just doesn't feel the same.
Point is from a business stand point theres an obvious market for it otherwise they wouldn't be making the games in the first place.
See retroclone systems and everdrive flash cart as examples of that retro game market.
$46 is a lot to you ? People pay hundreds for Neogeo MVS games to this day.
To understand you have to be an enthusiast in the first place.
I mean why do people pay ridiculous amounts for games when when you could for the most part just download the roms and play.
The simple answer is they are enthusiasts that's why.
Remember Beggar Prince got released wayyyy after the life cycle of the Megadrive / Genesis.
Even think about the market for reproduction carts it all ties into the enthusiast market for these types of games.
Think about the market there are still retrogamers buying games for the dreamcast that were released during it's commercial life cycle.
These people are enthusiasts so that's who is going to buy the game in the first place.
Some of the rare games people will probably have paid more than $46 either way.
The way I see it if you don't want to buy the game for the Dreamcast the don't but there are obviously those that do.

Re: Redspot Games announces new Dreamcast game "Sturmwind"
exactly how I feel. I have a lot of GBA homebrew releases that I bought because of this.msimplay wrote: There's nothing like having an original hardcopy of a game.

case in point: ggg is working on Holy Hell right now. The screens look absolutely amazing. But once he said he's working on making physical carts, I decided not to download the demo. It's just not the same to me to fire up a ROM as it is to wait and have a physical release in my hand. It's the same reason that I don't play my ROM of Magical Chase for GBC. Waiting until the day that I finally have a physical copy will just feel all the more awesome because of that.
Re: Redspot Games announces new Dreamcast game "Sturmwind"
Haha yeah I did, of course. God knows why I put "breeding"Beak wrote:Haha. This brought up a funny, albeit somewhat odd, mental scenario. I think you meant "breathing".Reprise wrote:I love the fact that people are still breeding new life into the Dreamcast...![]()
And $46 is what, about £30? Not really that much, but I'll agree, it is a tad steep. But if the game gets good feedback, then yeah, I'd be happy to buy it. If it sucks like some of Redspotgames earlier releases, then I probably wouldn't buy it. Or maybe I'd try out the demo (if they release one) first. Anyways, I much prefer having physical copies of games rather than downloads (both legal and illegal). I wouldn't have a video games collection otherwise, would I?

See.. now this is a good follow-up post. Why couldn't there have been more of these instead of all the "there he is.. shoot him!" posts.msimplay wrote:There's nothing like having an original hardcopy of a game.Weekend_Warrior wrote:Nobody is upset about it. Re: Redspot Games announces new Dreamcast game "Sturmwind"
Perhaps going a bit off topic here sorry, but I also never understood why people always act like prices are so high on buying retro games, or that you're "mad" for spending a fair amount on an old game. Like, for example, say I bought Guardian Heroes on the Saturn for £40. People look at me like I'm mad. People sometimes say to me "why would you pay that sort of money on an old game!?" But I really do not understand that argument at all, considering it sometimes comes from people that pay £50 for the new Call of Duty game... I'd rather spend my money on an old game, that I've always wanted since I was a kid, that is unique and quirky, than some new game that I'd probably get bored of after a while.
All that matters at the end of the day is whether the person gets pleasure from the product they've bought imo. And I guess that kind of ties in with this thread and relevent debates. If people are happy to pay $46 for a new Dreamcast game, then that's choice to be fair. something is only worth what people are prepared to pay.

Re: Redspot Games announces new Dreamcast game "Sturmwind"
I think I'll throw my two cents in:
I understand the novelty of releasing a game for the Dreamcast. It's cool to see a game released for a dead console. Shit, if I had an Atari 5200 I'd buy Adventure II. However, I understand what Weekend_Warrior is saying when he says there should be an XBLA version of this game. It's just not good business to have only a game released for a dead platform. It's hard to get exposure that way. It'd be better if your game was released for the Dreamcast and for Windows. Maybe have a timed exclusive? Have the game only available for the Dreamcast for about a year and release the Windows (or other platform) port when finished. About the price point, yeah $45 is a bit pricey for an Independent game, but that can be considered to be a premium for having a hard copy with a manual.

I disagree it's a good business model to cater to retrogamers brand new games for the Xbox 360 cost about 40 pounds for a brand new game
To release a retrogame is the same as releasing a new game except for an older platform.
I personally feel that releasing games on a a service such as Xbox live devalues the game.
This is why I like console games in the first place
PS its easier to own Dreamcast games on an Actual Dreamcast as while services such as Xbox live may recieve some releases they will never receive them all due to things like licences and of course homebrew.
If you are an enthusiast of the Dreamcast then new games will hold an obvious value for you.
I mean it leads onto a whole other subject just because a game is old does it mean it's not worth the money anymore ?
Even if the old game is much better than the so called new game released on a brand new platform ?

Re: Redspot Games announces new Dreamcast game "Sturmwind"
I still disagree with the business sense of releasing it for the Dreamcast but if this guy is doing it as a labor of love/hobby, then that's fine. I have no issues with the $46 price. I mean, his production costs might be somewhat high due to the small quantity.
Were the other games professionally done (pressed discs, high quality manual, etc)? Or does it look like it was done by someone on their ink jet printer at home?
